Stereo Question: Need to hear voices over background noise

I know this isn't exactly computer related but I couldn't bare to ask anybody other than fellow anandtechers... So here's the problem:

My girlfriend's dad watches sports games all the time and complains that he can't hear what the announcers are saying over all the background noise of the game. He was thinking that he needed some kind of surround sound stereo system that would let him turn up the voices and down the background somehow. I'm not sure how exactly this would work... but I've been assigned (by his wife) to pick out a system for her to get him for Christmas that will fix the problem.

Any suggestions would be most appreciated. Thanks!

Seriously, he maybe needs a hearing test first.
As we get older, sometimes lower-keyed (male) voices become more difficult to make out clearly.
