I purchased an opteron 148 in late november and havent really finished building the system up yet. I have run it for school work and its worked great but havent put it to the gaming test(was waiting on a arctic silencer for my x800 and there is a mix up between my bank and svc)but i am coming across articles saying that there will be multi threaded games in 06 and multithreaded apps, like photoshop and stuff like this will take advantage of dual core. so basically i am gonna be buying on maybe more towards spring time and was wondering what i should get. I would like to get an x2 4800, but in reality im leaning more towards a 165 or x2 4400/4200. What are your opinions?

Opteron 165! That is one bad-@$$ chip... once you go dual core, you'll never go back and the 165 is capable of (generally) insane overclocks. Meaning, you can OC a 165 pretty easily to the point where it equals, or beats, the X24800, and the 165 is less than half the price of that 4800. You don't have to think about that, just nod.

Generally speaking the range is 2.5-2.7 for the dual cores. Most will get near to that 2.7 with the right equipment and a little luck with proc stepping. There really isnt any gurantee after 2.5 so be aware of that.

Monarch has had the newest good steppings for some time, but they are a bit expensive. I know for sure that some of the best steppings, or weeks, are 0546 and 0547. Check Pricewatch, as well as mwave and tankguys and the other smaller guys.
