I highly recommend The Dark Tower series to everyone, as well as Desperation, and there are some goodies in Nightmares and Dreamscapes. I just feel like he gets a bad rap from all of the shlocky (yet entertaining) movies based on his books, but he's my favorite writer so far, and I consider myself to be pretty well-read compared to others in my age range (low 20s). If you don't like him, fine, no need to flame, but if you haven't read any of his novels, give the man a chance like I did...

im considering picking up 'the stand' again. its been over ten years since i've read it and seeing the movie on cable lately and reading the wikipedia entry have made me want to read it again.

and the movies arent all that shlocky. in fact if he got frank darabont to direct his works from here on out it'd be awesome. i mean, they've been trying to redo 'it' for the longest time; imagine a darabont version! just please spare us a giant spider!

Not all of his movies were done horribly. The Shining is a classic. Cujo and Pet Cemetary were good, as well.

I always think of 'The Langoliers' when I think of Stephen King. That was a mighty interesting read. There's an obscure TV movie based on it (haven't seen it) but I really think it would make for a decent (modern) mid-budget movie.

Haven't read Dark Tower but I hope to soon.

The TV movie was horrible, pathetically horrible.

I just finished "Wizard and Glass" the other day. I have the last three books on my shelf and plan to start "Wolves of the Calla" very soon. This series is awesome so far. Each book has been better than the last. I hope that King keeps the story going just as well in the last three books.

Best story ever told.

Great books. I'd mostly written Stephen King off, he did what he did well but I'd stopped reading him and then I picked Dark Tower up. Must read.

dark tower started off so great, but the last 4 books were such crap :(

I barely made it through W&G (lolflashbacks) and read the remaining three purely out of a desire to see what happened (I wish I hadn't).

My favorite book ever.

Also - let's not forget "The Shawshank Redemption", one of my other favorites too.

Not a bad movie adaptation either.

The Dark Tower series has made me not care about reading another book for the rest of my days. I reread the series about once every 2 years.

I enjoy his older stuff and his short story compilations. Nightmares & Dreamscapes, Everything's Eventual... awesome, awesome stuff.

I read the unabridged version of The Stand, and it was highly entertaining. I also enjoyed Salem's Lot.

I think King gets a bum rap because he can convey a feeling of getting caught up in his own preachiness. Also, I just don't like the fact that every non-human makes the exact same sounds. If you've read Cell, you know what I'm talking about. Whenever people go crazy, King has the same collection of onamotopoeia (sp) to describe the ridiculous sounds they make.

Favorite book of my favorite series. This is the pinnacle of King's character building and story telling. Wizard and the Glass could stand on its own and would be a very good movie.

as far as "shlocky" movies, i'd hardly consider "Shawshank" and "The Green Mile" as anything less than amazing. "Misery" and "shining" were also damn good although I hear Kubrick really diverged from stephen king's intent for Shining. As far as books are concerned, I agree that he's one of the greatest authors ever. Not only does he have great plots, but all his characters are unique and tread the gray between good and bad. Great stuff.

I just couldn't finish the DT series....each book went downhill for me. I even live less than a half mile from Gage Park in Topeka where parts of the story unfolded.

Other than the movie ending of Pet Cemetary I agree, although movies generally pale compared to books IMHO.

Pretty sure SK is an alien, no clue how he produces so much work.

I blazed through the first 6 books of the Dark Tower series, grabbed the 7th in eager anticipation... and then stopped reading halfway through, not because I didn't enjoy reading it, but I couldn't find the time to finish.

It's been so long now that I'll probably have to re-read the entire series to enjoy the finale.

The ending is something that most people seemed kinda disappointed in. But given time it's grown on me. I think it's just that no matter what he did, Stephen King wouldn't have been able to fully please his readers. The series was too good to have an ending that would live up. My main complaint is that the Crimson King was disappointing. I guess I could be consider a bit of a fan.
