i took marine biology in undergrad. I thought we would be learning about sharks, octopusses, sharctopussess....and stuff. wrong!

most boring class evar. all i remember is stuff like ocean zones and currents and stupid bullshit.

not one single shark or orca video.

I loved learning that kind of stuff, hated comparative physiology etc. I was very interested in marine biology and ecology in college but the lack of jobs eventually made me go into molecular biology. All the tediousness but none of the fun. At least in marine biology you get to go outside once in a while and if you are involved in the right kind of research you can eat your samples (did some ocean floor sampling where we got some sea urchins and several different soles).

heh, I too, wanted to be a marine biologist.. As I got older, I realized I hated memorizing and the tediousness of lab work; so I studied EE and computers instead, because I was interested in mainly computers and networks.

I got the best of both worlds XD. I'm a lowly peon/computer-dude aboard research vessels. Non of the tediousness, but 100% of all adventure, traveling the globe, and assisting all kinds of scientists with their research. It's also mainly Navy funded too; which means gathering data for submarines, ocean acoustics research, seeing cool prototype AUVs, working with ROVs, seeing and working closely with all kinds of wildlife in the ocean, working with reknown scientists from around the world..

I love seeing passionate scientists do there thing and explain their research to me. Some of them are very eccentric, but when you start talking to them on why they do this and what they do, they don't stop talking. It's a complete honor and rewarding experience to work with them and the Navy.

downside? I have only been home for two months since October of last year... I've been at sea, or in some other country since then.
