According to research firm IDC, current worldwide smartphone market share is:

Android 59%
iOS 28%
WinMo/Blackberry/Symbian 13%

Care to speculate on the upcoming mobile platforms, Boot 2 Gecko and Tizen? Where will things stand in 4 years or so? Think Boot 2 Gecko will syphon off a significant percent of Android users? Would Samsung ever abandon Android altogether and just go with Tizen?

I'm no analyst, but I don't see Boot 2 Gecko ever being more than a niche. They just don't have the resources to compete with Google. And I doubt they can draw off any iOS users. So I predict B2G never rising above 12%.

Tizen I have no idea. There's just too many variables there to say

To be honest I've never heard of either. The only way a new os is going to make a dent is if it is truly amazing and does something the others can't adapt to.

Yeah. Well from what I've been reading, Boot 2 Gecko is an OS developed by Mozilla, it focuses on apps in HTML5. So it's not proprietary with APIs like Android. Should be more open and geared towards simpler smartphones and feature phones. Since it will mainly be operating within the browser, it will be more uniform.

Tizen is an open source, standards based mobile OS that branched out of Meego. It's main backers are Intel and Samsung.

Never heard of either, but if Tizen's backers are Samsung / Intel it will probably go nowhere. Maybe be as successful as Samsung's bada, but definitely not a big player.

I don't see the other one being any more successful in marketshare. Mozilla barely released firefox for mobile in beta form, I don't think their os will be any more competitive.

Hmmm. See I'm not as sure. The smartphone market is much more volatile than others. Look at what happened to Symbian and Blackberry. I'm not saying that Android is in the same category as Symbian, but you never know.

The other thing is, unlike Apple, Google is entirely dependent on their OEMs. Samsung being the largest smartphone manufacturer it is, if it ever say, gets sick of playing nice with Google, it could decide to drop Android altogether.

Samsung is currently working on Tizen with Intel. Intel is looking for a smartphone platform with the Ion chipset. I'm just saying if Intel ever decides to throw it's full weight behind Tizen, things could get interesting.
