If you don't have anything to post about the subject, don't post. And if you knew anything, Bush is solely responsible for the ban of federal funding of embryonic stem cells, so its his call, not anyone elses.

Damn Christians making people suffer in the name of their morality.
Geron also had a new patent approved relating to stem cells today, as well. Let's hope these fundamentalists lose power and give power back to those who want to improve our lives. (And let's all kick me for selling GERN at 7 :()

Somehow Bush equates stem cells with unborn viable fetusus.
He prefers not to know the facts on this one, as it contradicts
the Anti-Abortion support he has.

The law is so outdated, Bush and his followers are so wrapped up in their war they don't realize that this is the future of medicine. The stuff they can already do is amazing, and changes have to be made to allow this technology to grow.

Why is your "non-christian" morality somehow superior than Christian morality? I think the argument can be made that protecting the sanctity of human life could improve people's lives just as much as medical advances.. but you are too blinded by your bigotry to even think about the other side..

And before you attack me, I am pro stem-cell research.. but we have to be careful how we proceed, as the consequences could outweigh the benefits if done in the wrong way or for the wrong purposes.

Take your hatred and bigotry somewhere else..

I wouldnt necessarily blame "Christians" for this. There are many that support this research, myself being one of them. The "Christians" you speak of are mainly of the fundy group that give Christians as a whole a bad rep. Anyway, this is good to hear that the research is still making considerable progress in the area. If only Bush would rescind that federal order about restricting funding for stem-cell research. (this has nothing to do with my opinion of Bush as a whole, just with his views on this one particular subject of stem cells)

The only consequences of stem cell research is the destruction of embryo's right? So when a couple goes to a fertility clinic, creates 4 embryos, only uses 1 what happens to the others? Well right now nothing, they will never grow into human beings unless that couple wants to have another child. I would rather use these embyos for research purposes instead of them being destroyed.

Is the ban only in the United Sates?

The ban is only on funding for embryonic stem cells, which have shown increasing amount of promise in curing diseases, scientists have actually created beating human heart cells from embryonic stem cells.

Right now Australia is believed to be the best place in the world for stem cell research. Europe is pretty much cut in half with the UK, sweden and several other countries fighting for funding, while Germany, Italy, norway have bans against any research using embryos.

Why is Bush's Christian morality somehow superior to mine, such that he can impose it on the government that I pay taxes to? Why should my taxes go towards funding his religious agendas?

Do you know where stem cells come from? Are you too blinded by your faith in your religio-political leaders to look at the facts?

That's fine, but can't we have a rational discussion about the pros and cons instead of simply banning certain kinds of research because it's too "different"? A recognition of the differences in different peoples' views on what is moral and what is not would also be nice, as would a decision to not impose one person's religious beliefs on the behaviors of others.
Take your hatred and bigotry somewhere else..
If I had any, I might consider that.

Bush was right to fear the dangers of cloning and genetic manipulation. But by dening US scientists carefully monitored research for medical purposes, were only going to fall behind.

Correct me if I'm wrong but there are other sources of stem cells than aborted embryos.

I see more post form people that don't really know what or or all that they are talking about, I have been getting all the so called treatments on spinal cord injuries since about 1970 and most just fade away and most are just to get more money then it fades away, What Bush said no to was going the way that would be to pricey for me to walk again and most the guys I know at the VA said it wasn't the way they wanted to go either

Now only if Bush reversed his decision from August 2001, we would see some real progress then.

I dont know if that is the case. Scientest have been forced to do research on how to create stem cells by other methods. MOre good research has spawned from this. It may not be as easy, but it will be equally enlightning.

The issue really isn't the amount of reasearch that has already taken place. Like the scientists in this article, many research groups are using mouse stem cells, which they can get funding for. But in order for them to create new stem cell lines, because the current ones are pratically useless for actually treating humans, these scientists need large amounts of money. Even though some techniques in creating stem cells from human and mouse embryonic stem cells are similar, many scientists are finding that it just isn't as easy in humans. Bush's decision didn't slow down research yet, but it will, now that these scientists have been able to create these cells in mice the logical next step is to do it for humans. Unfortunately they will not be able to recieve the necessary funding from the government that they were probably recieving for the mice embryonic research. This is just going to slow the creation of these treatments that have already shown great promise.

Both are expensive, as is any new research. But researchers can recieve federal funding for mouse stem cells. Unfortunately to reproduce results like these with human stem cells a lot more research has to be done. Unfortunately, scientists will eventually hit a roadblock with the amount of research that can be done on mouse stem cells.
