The white blood stem cells they are talking about are actually adult bone marrow stem cells. The adult stem cells located in the bone marrow are very flexible, in that they can be coaxed to becoming other kind of cells (not just the predetermined white blood cells). The problem is that adult stem cells cannot be used to grow organs. Only embryonic stem cells can be used to grow organs that the body will not reject. The current idea is to use cloned embryonic stem cells (start the cloning process of you, and then take the stem cells when the egg splits to around 100-200 cells). These cells will have your exact DNA and the body will not reject them. The problem occurs when ethics come into play. Does this gob of 200 cells have the same rights as the person that they will be used to save? I say no, but too many people say yes.
EDIT: Also, this is old news (well not old, but has been done). The Texas Heart Institue has used bone marrow stem cells to rejuvinate dying hearts. They take these stem cells and implant them within the hearts of heart attack patients, and the hearts go from barely functioning to nearly perfect condition.
