while i support stem cell research, i think that this issue pales in comparison to national security, especially when there are outlying HOSTILE peoples wanting to hurt us rather desperately.

9/11 attacks happened under Bush even though he was briefed about it. That speaks volumes for his "national security" merits.

So he was told exactly when the attack would occur, exactly which buildings and other targets would be hit and what color underwear the terrorists were wearing?? sorry if I missed the link which shows he was given this info....

That's just one of many reasons to vote democrat this election cycle. Remember, you need a congress to support this too. Don't just go to the polls to vote by yourself, take a friend, hell take a carload of neighbors who think like you and want a change in this adminstration with its draconian idealism. The longer we keep this bonifide jerk in office, the closer we come to being like communist Russia with lose of freedoms going daily by this adminstrations twisted thinking and demagogery.

I was a Democrat strongly leaning towards towards the right the past 4-5 years. I voted for Gore but found myself getting closer to the Republican Party. The stem cell stance by the current administration will force me to vote for Kerry.
My sister was involved in horrible accident 12 years ago and is an a wheelchair. She is very active in Stem Cell research and even went to a UN conference several months ago to prevent a US driven resolution that would ban stem cell research globally.
As expected, many of the supporters of stem cell research are Kerry supporters as well. We are currently involved in some Kerry fundraisers, and in Florida every single vote counts.
getting back to my original point, I think the best government is a split one. With gridlock, it seems like Washington works better. I will vote for the Kerry/Edwards ticket with Republicans getting my vote on the congressional side.
I was just going to post the same thoughts.Originally posted by: digitalsm

Your facts are slightly off, the US didnt try to push for a global ban on stem cell research. The UN proposal was over cloning embryos for stem cell research. The US did not overly push for it, we merely supported the proposal. Costa Rica drafted the proposal, and it had support from 43 countries. Where as the proposal allowing cloning of embryos for stem cell research and other non reproductive purposes only had support from 14 countries. So they compromised and pushed any vote back until 2005.
Furthermore, you dont even need to use cloning techniques for stem cell research, and as has been proven adult stem cells are viable for research. More difficult? Maybe but still extremely viable. It also does not need to be funded by the govt. There is PLENTY of capital out there for research.
All you have to do is look at the US funded Human Genome Project as an example for why it should not be federally funded. And thats, all these "researchers" ended up patenting the individual human genes they sequenced. Basically you had the govt paying for research, then these researchers patented their research. Now anyone that wants to do further research has to pay the previous researcher a huge sum of money for licensing. Talk about the govt giving handouts.
So to sum it up.
1. Embryonic stem cell research is not banned. Its not federally funded outside the current lines.
2. Adult Stem cell research has proven to be VIABLE and is federally funded.
3. The US has not and has never pushed for the global banning of stem cell research, only the cloning of embryos.

Honestly, I don't have a lot of time to dispute your comments. I will tell you that I have been to various events held by grass roots organizations in favor of embryonic stem cell research and therapeutic cloning. They are not politically affiliated with either party. They claim that the stem cells that come from a fetus are less developed and therefore have more potential to be used in therapy or to clone organs or spinal cord tissue... The thing that is upsetting is that these fetuses are not coming from abortion clinics, they are coming from fertility clinics that will dispose of them..
