Same team (for the most part) minus Ben, do you REALLY think Ben is so good that he turned the team around single handedly.. Was Maddox really that bad? What's the deal?

To add to what Kranky mentioned...
The Steelers were testing a short pass offense built around Tommy's strengths last year and it blew up in their face. It was the last year in a string of "lets build a half assed short game west coast offense and try to sell this little gay Kordell guy to the masses" failures.
They decided to go back to the bread and butter this year. Run the ball, control the ball and beat opponents senseless until they cry mommy.
They played to their collective strengths and got a lot of breaks along the way. Look at their margins of victory on the scoreboard and they were pretty slim. Their stats are impressive and steady.
The fact that the team is so deep (as evidenced by all the key injuries that didn't slow them down and the way they laid the smack to the Bills) is something that's been a pleasant surprise to me.
I've been a Steelers fan since around '83. I grew up loving the Cowboys, but when Landry was gone I lost interest. Bill Cowher's teams act and carry themselves like Landry's teams, with respect and composure. I like that.

We got it done with the 2nd and 3rd string. Great game.

Here we go steelers, here we go!!!!

We got it done? What position do you play for the Steelers?

Sorry, that's one of my biggest pet peeves. Your team got it done, not you.

Regardless, the Steelers look very good, but how can anyone call Cowher such a great coach? He lost all the respect I had for him during the '01 season when he told his team to "pack for New Orleans" prior to the Pats game. After that I've really come to the belief he is an average coach with an amazing team this year.

ACtually I play 3rd string Corner. .

Shut up, and please move along to another thread to crap on..

Yup Steelers are 15 and 1 and that's a great season. Pats are 14 and 2 though so not too far behind. Pats were also 14 and 2 last year to boot. To put together two seasons like that in a row is something.

You do know that Cowher's only the 5th coach in history to win at least 8 Division titles? (Up there with names like Landry and Shula.)

yeah, i know. But I've become biased since that call. He has a great track record, but I really don't like him as a coach.

bjc112 Sorry if you felt I was crapping your thread, I just spaz out and have to correct people when they say that ;) The steelers had an amazing season and they should be the favorites to win it all. Their win over Buffalo, on the road, cements their status as the #1 team in the league IMO.

I really do play 3rd string corner!!

;)

No hard feelings.

As long as you know who is at the top, that's all that matters.

Yes, considering they've played many top 10 backs and only Rudi Johnson broke 100 yards in a game the Bengals still lost, and this was before the Steeler bye week and their game against the Pats. Dillon won't be a difference maker in the game, keeping the Steelers honost against the run might help but if the Pats play the Steelers and win it won't be because Dillon had a great day.

Dillon vs. Bettis, Staley, Haynes and the rookie Parker, Steelers are most likely going to run over their opponents on their path to the superbowl.

Even though I have to admit the Steelers are the favorites, i'll be cheering for a Pats / Steelers rematch.

ALthough the Pats are probably going to face Indy first and if the secondary doesn't get healthy in a hurry (and if seymour doesn't get back) that game will = :(

:D I live in Bills country, but am not a Bills fan.... Finally, something to shut up their fans.

Now, I work in a pizza shop on the weekends... I've noticed that when the Bills win, EVERYONE seems to be wearing Bills hats, shirts, jackets, etc.

But tonight, only 3 drunken fans came in after leaving Rich Stadium. (because 1 of them was a coworker stopping in for free pizza)

I was happy to see the Bills doing well, i just wanted to see them get shutdown.. It was impressive to see it happen with second stringers..

Shows the depth and strength of the Steelers. Bill were hot, but not so hot now.

I hate the Steelers. The players on that team (especially Hines Ward, Burress, and Bettis) love to talk crap against the Patriots every time they go up against them. Nothing pleased me more during the 2001 AFC Championship game when the Patriots dominated the Steelers. Even after that butt-kicking, when the Patriots faced the Steelers on Opening day of the following season, the Steelers talked big again and lost handily for a second time.

True, they won handily the 3rd time. But how can you bet against a playoff-conditioned team like the Patriots against a Rookie QB? Not to mention the impending return of Ty Law and Corey Dillon in the most likely rematch?

Also, don't be surprised if the AFC Championship game takes place in Foxboro as the Patriots vs Chargers.

Could you provide a link to just one quote by any of the three players you named? Or a link to a quote from any Pats player claiming they talked crap against them?

Well, i can't recall any of those three, but kordell stewart said 'sometimes the better team doesn't win' after the pats beat the stealers in the 2001 afc championship game. What a punk! :disgust:

Then there was the fact that the steelers booked the trip to the superbowl even before they played the patriots. Talk about cocky...

Stiller fans, don't get too cocky yet. Any team in the AFC playoffs could show you that you may have blown your load too early... ;)

I'd LOVE to see a quote of Jerome Bettis talking crap on the Patriots. I'll paypal you $5 if you can provide such a link.

Bettis appeared insulted when a reporter suggested that the team's Super Bowl hopes are finally shaping up.

"I thought it shaped up pretty good before when we beat both of those teams," he said of consecutive victories against the Patriots and Eagles at midseason. "I feel good about our chances with anybody in the NFC and, definitely, everybody in the AFC. We feel confident, but we still have to take care of business. Anything can happen. We found that out the hard way a couple years ago."

From here.

Indirect smack... did I win? :)

Here you go Kranky:

http://www.patsfans.com/storie...tory.php?story_id=2057

A little clip from the article:

"I talked with the owner and there were a lot of things that I'm sure New England did, [but] I'm sure they were doing things behind their doors," said Cowher on Wednesday.? "Again, if anything, it was that once that week started, we knew what we had to do."

"We focused on the game at hand and if people took that as disrespectful, they were searching. They were reaching for something to use as bulletin board material. Like I said, I don't think it had any affect on the game whatsoever."

"They made more plays than we did, and what we said leading up to the game had no affect on what was done on the field."

He can say what he likes on the matter, but the outcome apparently still hasn't convinced him to put a muzzle on his players.? Wide receivers Plaxico Burress and Hines Ward have done their fair share of talking both throughout the offseason as well as recently, and Brady admitted that New England has heard everything that has been said.

"We hear what they say," said Brady.? "Believe me, none of it goes unread or unheard of, and if we shot back, we'd rather shoot back in our own locker room."

I'm searching around for some of the Bettis comments, but seeing as how the game was 3 years ago, it could take a little while to find.

Here's another.:

Now, in addition to this victory parade which will in all likelihood make even more Boston history, and rightfully so, the Patriots have to deal with a Pittsburgh Steelers team on the road on Sunday which still thinks they are a better team and that the Patriots are both dirty and lucky. Bettis bragged on CBS last week that he was rooting for the Patriots to beat the Jets because he wanted his team to snap the streak. Wide receivers Plaxico Burress and Hines Ward took shots at Ty Law and the Patriot cornerbacks, saying that they cover receivers illegally.

The Bettis quote is certainly not talking crap on any level whatsoever.

And the excerpt from the story on the patsfans.com site doesn't really cut it either. It says nothing other than the writer thinks Burress and Ward did some talking. No direct quotes. To me, that means someone said that someone said that someone said something... and no one knows what was actually said.

The reason I was so curious is that the Pittsburgh papers would absolutely be all over any trash talking by the Steelers and they just don't do it. On the field, I'm sure there is a lot of woofing. But saying stuff publicly would be played up big by the Pittsburgh media and that's not happened. It's not something Cowher would tolerate, and I doubt it happened.

From RedSoxNation.net (http://www.redsoxnation.net/fo...x.php?showtopic=11808)

PITTSBURGH (AP) -- Steelers wide receiver Plaxico Burress suggests there are two sets of pass coverage rules in the NFL these days -- one for the Super Bowl champion New England Patriots, another for the rest of the league.

Despite the increased emphasis on not allowing defensive backs to manhandle receivers downfield, Burress doesn't detect any difference in how the physical Patriots are playing, especially Pro Bowl cornerback Ty Law.

``They're arm-barring guys out of bounds, Ty Law's pushing guys 10-15 yards downfield, stopping in front of guys and bumping them when they're 20 yards downfield,'' Burress said. ``So I think it applies to everybody but them.''

Hines Ward, a three-time Pro Bowl receiver who likely will be matched Sunday against Law, plans to drop a few hints with the officiating crew to watch out for the Patriots' mayhem. Law's aggressive coverage against Colts star receiver Marvin Harrison was a key to New England beating Indianapolis in the AFC championship game last season.

``I'll be sure to talk to the refs early in the game, just to remind them of that game,'' Ward said.

Burress joked he might offer inducements to the officials.

``I'm going to send them cookies or something before the game starts,'' Burress said. ``Hopefully, we'll get some calls on those guys.''

Despite the Steelers receivers' woe-is-us talk, Ward is certain that he, Burress and No. 3 receiver Antwaan Randle El will have plenty of opportunities to make plays against an injury-depleted secondary.

Law is healthy, but cornerback Tyrone Poole sat out Sunday's victory over the New York Jets with a knee injury, forcing second-year cornerback Asante Samuel to start. The Patriots also started undrafted free agent rookie Randall Gay at free safety. Poole is questionable for Sunday.

Ward is coming off three consecutive 1,000-yard receiving seasons and is sixth in the league with 43 receptions. Burress isn't among the top 30 in receptions, but his average of 19.8 yards per catch on 19 receptions is among the league's best.

``I don't know how they're going to going to play both Plax and I,'' Ward said. ``I know Ty followed me the last couple of times, but Plax is a dominant force on the other side and I don't know how they're going to try to defend him over there, too.''

Law's answer? The same way the Patriots defended every other top receiver they've faced while winning 21 in a row overall and a league-record 18 straight during the regular season.

Law grew up in the football hotbed of Aliquippa, Pa., about a half-hour's drive from Pittsburgh, and helped the Quips win a Pennsylvania state championship as a senior. He always gets revved up to play at home, and enjoys the challenge of taking on a receiver such as Ward -- or will it be Burress?

``I'd be a fool to tell you that,'' said Law, who bought 40 game tickets for family and friends. ``I'm going to keep that under wraps. I'm probably going to see a little bit of both of them. They have a lot of good receivers over there, so you never know what is going to happen on game day.''

One difference since the teams last played two seasons ago -- a 30-14 New England season-opening win -- is that rookie Ben Roethlisberger, not Kordell Stewart, is Pittsburgh's quarterback.

Watching game tapes this week, Law said it wasn't difficult to see what Roethlisberger has brought to Pittsburgh's offense while winning his first four NFL starts. Coach Bill Belichick agreed, saying the Steelers run the same pass plays as they did with Stewart, but ``They don't come out the same.''

``The guy (Roethlisberger) is a different breed,'' Law said. ``We have to go in there and give him some different looks to see if he can pick up on what we are trying to do. We will try to rattle him as much as we can, try to put pressure on him and we'll see what happens.''
