Steel Cut Oats

That's breakfast this morning. Anyone else a fan? I've been eating them a lot lately. Just butter, and Celtic sea salt hand gathered by the Gauls off the Bretagne coast. That part's important :^D

Seriously though, it's good stuff. The extra cook time is worth it for the firm grain, and nutty flavor. Currently using Bobs Red Mill, but I don't think it makes a difference. I got some Millville oats from Aldi yesteerday, and was reading the label. On the front it says 40g of whole grain per serving, guaranteed! WTF does that even mean?! While I'm glad they didn't pack rocks in with my oats, I don't think that needed to be specified. Assholes... :^D

Yep, I recently tried steel cut oats for first time and from Bobs Red Mill. Delicious and much better than regular pressed oats like quaker oats. I made mine using water, a little salt and then added 1/2 teaspoon of butter and then topped with some strawberry preserves. Delicious and healthy breakfast. Would have never expected it since I'm not a fan of regular oatmeal

I avoid sweet flavors with the steel cut. I prefer it earthy and savory. I was actually thinking a touch of garlic powder would be good in them.

I use rolled oats for sweet stuff. I like getting plain rolled oats, but cooking them according to the instant directions(basically just pour boiling water on them). It keeps the texture firmer than actually cooking them, or using instant oats which I've grown to despise over the years.

I eat steel cut oats every morning for breakfast. I add a Granny Smith apple and some cinnamon.

I like rolled oats, but NEVER the "quick" or "instant" varieties. I like the old-fashioned, slow-cooking variety. I prefer the texture and "chewiness" much better.

IMO, the packaged "instant oatmeal" is something you feed your little children...NOT for adult consumption.

Yes, they are awesome. I used to use my fuzzy-logic rice cooker to cook it...came out perfect every time! Unfortunately, I'm allergic to oatmeal (grains/grass family), so I'm stuck on quinoa now 😛

Yeah, I probably have the taste buds of a twelve year old.

Sadly, the "chewiness" makes it so I can't eat the old-fashioned ones 🙁 I broke my jaw a few years ago and anything of that type of texture becomes painful to eat.

You can try this again without all the profanity, if you like.

Remember the cold cereal Buckwheats? I loved them as a kid. Frosted, but much better flavor than cornflakes.
They were awesome! There is a "health food store" version still available but it isn't as good as the original.

Our recipe is to soak buckwheat groats overnight then simmer in the morning and add honey as the buckwheats finish cooking. They are even better with dried (hunza) apricots. Just soak the apricots overnight with the buckwheat groats and pull out the pits before cooking. Also good with dried blueberries (added at the table). Whole milk and/or half and half to complete.

I'll try that some time. There's a lot of good grain cereals out there that aren't oatmeal or farina. I need to explore them more.
