SteamPowered, is it really free?

...And if it is free, how do I get it to work? I downloaded the minimum Steam installer, but it said I needed a key-code. Right now I am downloading Counter Strike cache to see if that works. Can anyone explane to me what I have to do to get this thing to run? Thanks!

It's free in the sense that existing CS and HL retail key codes gain access to the complete Valve catalog (HL, CS, DoD, Firearms, etc.). However if you don't have a valid CD key it will not work. Try getting the cheapest copy of HL or CS retail and you can use the key with Steam.

Dangit! Thanks for responding PliotronX. I might just buy a really cheap copy, like you suggested, so I can play Half Life 2 when it comes out.
