This is the Open Source Steam Operating System from Valve, based on Debian Linux

SteamOS is an open source and free Linux distribution especially designed for Valve’s Steam Machines gaming console, powered by the popular Steam gaming distribution platform, and based on the powerful Debian GNU/Linux operating system.

SteamOS is a Linux distro that uses the embedded version of the GNU C Library from Debian Testing, Linux kernel 3.10, as well as proprietary graphics drivers, supporting Nvidia graphics cards.

It is targeted towards gaming, a gaming platform where Steam is the main software used to enjoy some of your best ever gaming experiences on Linux, but users will also be able to run regular Linux applications inside SteamOS, thanks to its regular desktop mode.

SteamOS is distributed as a Debian installer, supporting both 32-bit and 64-bit architectures, as well as a system restore image. Detailed installation instructions are provided at http://steamcommunity.com/groups/steamuniverse/discussions/1/648814395741989999/

Requirements:

  • Intel or AMD 64-bit capable processor
  • 4GB or more memory
  • 500GB or larger disk
  • NVIDIA graphics card
  • UEFI boot support
  • USB port for installation

500 GB hard drive seems a bit much. I wonder if that is for the boot drive or a total space number.

hmm...i could do it with an older nvidia 7900GS...but i could probably only play counterstrike D:

I don't believe you can even play games on this OS yet?
