The fact an internet connection *must* be present is reason enough for me to pass. The internet here goes down enough that it could be a problem for me. In fact I usually play a game when the internet is down to kill a little time. Too many restrictions.

No you dont. Start Steam in offline mode, and it will work fine.

Another nitpick, steam is pretty sluggish for a 2d app. Try dragging the steam window around, it's just not as fluid as it could be, possibly because they implemented their own GUI instead of just using Microsoft's built in stuff. And the steam overlay is very sluggish, though Valve blames that on their use of Internet Explorer and how poorly suited it is to that type of integration. I believe their implementation of the Steam overlay is basically just taking a framebuffer snap shot and then overlaying it on top of everything. They've considered switching to webkit, but considering that there's been no major improvements to Steam since it's launch in 2004, I doubt we'll see anything anytime soon.

I agree it's a miracle that it doesn even as well as it does considering it's all built using IE6. A switch to webkit would be awesome! I never heard that rumor, but my heart skipped a beat in joy.

I saw this deal on slickdeals and bought it.

The whole Steam app was slow and cruddy to begin with, and despite so many updates... it never got any better....

Its common knowledge (and a fact) that Steam has gotten a lot better over the years.

But good try!

Alright, alright. I exaggerated a bit. Well, maybe more than just a little. Steam did improve a lot over the years.

I still remember hating it when it first came out, because it was annoying and slow. I think I was still using 56k modem at the time and having to always connect to the internet to log-in was annoying (yes, I could stop it from doing that, but it was annoying having to switch back and forth as it was a very slow process for some reason...). It was also annoying having it randomly update as well. It's not much of a problem now, fortunately. However, it still seems kinda unresponsive sometimes. It's still kinda slow to start up, though this seems to be much better since I've been using Windows 7 (either it's superfetch or Steam actually did improve). And I still sometimes randomly get long wait times before a game finally launches.

Anyways more on topic... Wish ME has a co-op mode... That would at least give it some multiplayer awesomeness. hmmm, now there's an interesting idea.

I the Steam deal for Mass Effect isn't on any more, but this deal to pick up Pinnacle Station still works. It takes a few minutes, but it is free. I just used it a few hours ago.

I decided not to bother. I've heard nothing but bad things about that DLC. One of those "wish I never tried" dealies.
