I loved Total War 2 but is Empire good enough to buy or should I just stick with TW2?

Empire: Total War is one of my favorite games but it's a tricky recommendation. Based on experience, you'll probably either consider it amazing or mediocre. I'll list a couple of the changes/improvements with comments.

- Graphics are greatly improved. I love how the battles look and watching the individual units in each line clash. The downside is that with the large number of units there are to process with a better graphics engine, it can take a very good system to run it well and there can be very long loading times.

- The 18th century era is a huge change. Empire captures it pretty well but some people simply prefer the older eras. The biggest change is that you no longer rely on dedicated ranged and melee divisions, since the musket can be both ranged and close combat via bayonet. This was a big drawback for many people who preferred the old mechanic where you build a bunch of archers and then use your melee to protect them. I liked the change because it made the battles more complicated and added the strategy of knowing when to keep your enemy at a distance and when to charge in. Cavalry also got a major upgrade via some of the advanced formations.

- The singleplayer campaign The Road to Victory is pretty well done and serves as a pretty solid tutorial.

Steam claims I've played E:TW for 123.1 hours so far which is ahead of Anno 1404 (105 hours) but well behind Civ 4 (225 hours).

Just finished a grand campaign in Empire and took over a good 50% of the world. Just kept my 2 Allies alive, and butchered the rest. Was raking in at least 50k in gold per turn even with 7or 8 full stack, standing armies parked around the globe.

Not sure if I want Napoleon or not. Unless it goes on sale maybe.

Now that Empire is finally ready for release, I'd say it's worth the purchase.

It's all about trade in this game, you must get ports(if you don't have them), you must form trade agreements, and you must take trade outposts, do this and you almost win by default, you'll be swimming in money.

I find the other continents to be an annoying distraction, while simultaneously recognizing that this game had to be designed this way.

I'm almost ready to say I'm definitely purchasing Napoleon, I want to go back to the smaller scale of "just Europe".

The only thing holding me back from buying Empire is the 15gb file size. Would take forever and use up a big chunk of my cap. That's a damn good deal though since the boxed copy is still $40.

Never played a Total War game. Tried the demo for Empire last year but didn't like it but I heard the demo sucked but for this price to play the older ones is hot.

The thing with Steam deals is that I'll buy the games that I don't like or haven't played then end up liking them.

Hrm.. is 13.50 a good deal for the Naval combat of Empire? Or should I just spring the extra $7 and get the whole pack?

heat, Medevial 2 and kingdoms are well worth the price alone IMO. You will get hours of replay value...and I mean hours. I played the game a year straight. The whole trick is to hope it won't become a CTD fest.

<3 the TW games. Medieval 2 was fantastic, and I'm still searching for time to play Empire.

Finally played Medieval 2: Total War after having it installed for the last couple of months. I started around 6PM yesterday and didn't finally force myself to stop until 1AM. Didn't seem like more than a few hours.

If you have the expansion pack for it, try out the Third Age Total War mod. Makes everything lord of the rings
