Your arguing a point with the absolute minority example. There is one card with a huge rebate, while there are 18 other models at newegg still at 150-199.
I would say the avg price without rebate paid for a gtx 460 of any type would be 180.00 - 200.00
The avg 5850 probably was 290.00
The avg 5870 360.00
For the majority of cards that make up those Steam %'s.

edit: Also for people questioning Nvidia making money on the gtx 460, they made thier own label brand at Best Buy and charge 299.99 for them. Thats along side 200 dollar 5770's ,so its all relevant.

you're right, because almost everybody looks for the highest price that they can possibly pay for a card. That's what I did when I bought mine! That's probably what you do as well. And even if every single person in europe/north america did that, what about china, india, africa, south america, etc? generally speaking, a computer system is a much % of a person's budget in a developing country than it is a developed one, so those people would most likely work even harder to find the "best deal". Nobody searches for the "average" deal. Heck, I paid $146 shipped with no rebate on my card a month after they were out. No offense, but that is clearly a stupid argument. The deal is $90, it has been around for months, it is on one of the best brands that NV has, and it is available at very well-known/reputable websites that reasonably competent shoppers will view before purchasing. Your argument is very poor in my opinion, the OP asked for a link to deal that was 1/2 the price of a 5850, he got one, and now you are trying to build a strawman for him.

460 is a strong card all-around. I would not go as far as saying it is the new 8800GT, but it is what nV partners were looking for after a GT200(b) and Fermi launch with no real "mainstream" offerings.
no doubt, the 460 is great. the 768mb version is the best value card in the low/mid range in years imho, especially at it's current market price of $90. The discussion is not about its merit, but about the steam survey. A $90-$200 card with 3 different low/midrange offerings should sell better than a $160-$200 SET of two midrange only cards.

The cheapest 460 768 on newegg is $130 with a $20 MIR. That is $20 higher than your "market" price. There are only 2 at this price, the rest are higher. $90 is not the market price.

Since we're discussing the gtx460 vs. the 5850 and 5870, lets throw the 5830 in there too. The 5830 came out on Feb. 24th, the gtx460 on July 11. The gtx460 has more than double the users than the 5830 on the steam survey, despite being in the similar price bracket and roughly similar performance segment.

Im not quite sure I understand. Are you comparing the entire 5800 series to the GTX460 series?

The $400+ 5870, $300+ 5850, $250 5830 to the $200 460 1GB, $150 460 768, I'm not sure where the SE launched though.

Besides the 5830 was priced close to the 465. Both cards didn't sell well and weren't on the market long.

But compare what you like, Doesn't matter either way, steams survey not very accurate to begin with.

Very impressive numbers for the GTX 460 series in a short period of time. Granted that for some reason the GTX 460 768MB and 1GB are lumped together on Steam, while the 5850 and 5870 are separated. The GTX 460 cards have 2.49% of the total video cards on Steam now, while the 58xx cards together are 4.52%.

It's interesting to see how disappointingly some current cards are selling, though - in particular the 6800 cards, and the GTX 480 and 470.

This!

Pretty much sums up the correct conclusion.

Funny how this Thread is about the 460 outselling 5850/5870 and not the 5770 outselling the 460/5850/5870.

My guess is that the 5770 figure comes from pre-built systems. Although plenty of people buy it directly, the 5770 was a perfect OEM card due to its low price at the outset and its low power consumption. Great for Dell and HP to put in their mid-range gaming systems. It's also been around for a while.

That's a good point - and don't forget Apple, who put the 5770 as the high end option on some of their desktops for awhile!

With that said, i don't think the 5770 got its dominant position just because of being in pre-built systems, but because of price. The 5770 was $100 for awhile and it's #1. The GTX 460 series, which has been in the $100-150 range (AR) for awhile now is #2.

And again I stress that this isn't really a fair comparison because it's the GTX 460 760MB / 1GB / SE compared to the 5850 and 5870 individually. They lump the GTX 460 family together but no the 58xx family. It's impressive because the GTX 460 hasn't been out that long, but the 58xx cards are still whooping the GTX 460's butt overall. However, I expect the GTX 460 to narrow the gap or overtake the 58xx cards, as the 58xx cards are no longer being manufactured and the GTX 460's are still fantastic cards for the money.
