Steam Summer sale 2013 starting today ?

Seem likely ? Anyone have some insight ? 😉

Not that it won't be the same thing as last year where I find I already own everything that has a great deal on it and wind up with a bunch of games I didn't want and never end up playing. 😀

It usually starts on a Thursday at the end of June or beginning of July, so I wouldn't be surprised to see it today.

Some people seem to think that the trading card beta ending yesterday is a sign that it will start today.

Can we turn off that trading cards thing? Its about as dumb as collecting hats.

Is there some point to those cards ? Seems like a strategy to generate sales of the games that allow you to earn cards and then award coupons to give discounts, again encouraging more sales.

Oh boy last year was brutal on me! This year I only have a couple games I'll be watching for a sale. I still have games I haven't played since the las big sale!

But Valve only cares about the gamers, not money. So I hear.

:sneaky:

I noticed I started gaining them as well playing TF2 lately. I guess it's no longer an "opt-in" program/beta?

I thought the rumors are that it starts at the 30th.

I won't be buying much, if any, this time though*

*Yeah, right...

Even though I bought a handfull of stuff last year, the sales weren't all that great... too many repeat deals. I hope we have less of that this year.

The good thing about the trading cards is that you can sell them on the Steam Market for 50 cents to a dollar each, almost instantly, if you don't want to collect them. Plenty of people buying them.

You could get enough for a free game or three during the Steam sale.

hopefully there will be something I don't already have or at least that I actually want on sale for a good price. There are some indie games that came out recently that I would like to see on sale.

My wallet is ready!! The new crafted badges, rank and achievements makes me feel like I'm getting ready to grind away in a MMO like warcraft. :colbert:

If Max Payne 3 finally hits sub $9.99 I'm in. I wanted to get it near release but had too many other games on my plate... Might as well wait for that ~$5 deal now 😉

EDIT:

Oh, same goes for Skyrim... but I'll bite near $10 probably.

The trading cards are great. I've been doing it since it first launch like a month ago. I have $55 in my Steam Wallet now from it and that is after crafting 8 badges, buying 4 games just for the cards (and selling the cards and making more money off the cards than the games cost me) and keeping a background that is worth $7-8.

You earn the cards simply by being in the game. So when new games are added, I launch the game and alt+tab it and do whatever it was I was doing and earn the cards like that.

I did this accidentally and got some cards for a game so I started doing this as well.

I am really looking forward to the summer sale since there are a few games I really want and I hope they are put on at some point.

I'm guessing this is how it works, but I cannot find this information anywhere - you only can get half the cards from just playtime in a game, but other people get a different set of half the cards....right?

It's the only way I can think of that it would work, because how could anyone ever get the non-drop cards otherwise.

How about the boosters? Are you pretty much guaranteed one once you get all the drop cards? How long before you get them?

It is setup so that you wont get all the cards to craft a badge. You are correct that you get about half (or little bit more) of the cards as drops, but you can also get duplicates (or more) of the same card. When you check to see what cards are needed for a badge, on the bottom it has a list of people on your friends list that have the cards you need. You can either trade with them if you have multiple of same cards, or the easier more convenient route currently, sell/buy them on the market.

Booster packs are from my understanding only for certain games and are totally random who gets them. I received a Go Home Dinosaurs! booster pack the other day for the first time. It had 3 cards for the game inside it.

What's the incentive for collecting the cards necessary to "craft badges?"

When you craft badges you get a few things.

You receive a background image you can sell or use on your profile of the game you crafted the badge for (each game has a few different backgrounds from common to rare).

You receive an emoticon for the game you crafted the badge for and you either sell or keep it for use during chat and such.

You receive a random coupon. The coupon has is for a random game at a random percent off it seems.

You receive experience points towards your profile to level up.

Leveling up currently provides you with some stuff, nothing too important. It does allow you to showcase more things on your profile page though as you gain more levels. Not sure what else off hand.

Nothing amazing and all totally optional. Nice for those of us that enjoy doing stuff on Steam and have larger libraries.
