my connection ain't the fastest and my bandwidth is limited. I have HL2 + CS:S installed, but when I reinstalled XP and reinstalled Steam, they're not coming up in my games list. I know a lot of programs have to be totally reinstalled when you do a clean install of XP, but is there anything I can do to get these working without re-downloading? my monthly bandwidth is about 7 gigs and that would take over half :)

ummm Steam isn't that bad, I mean if I had DSL or Cable, I'd click "download" go eat lunch watch a lil TV come back and it'd be installed and ready to play. I bought HL2 the day it came out, Steam wasn't too hot back then, but it's great now. And they have a killer selection of games.

Next time, use STEAM's backup utility to create CDs or DVDs of your STEAM games, but yeh, you are going to have to redownload them.

you can try and burn the files from a friend -- they the really large ones sitting in the steam directory. copy them over via dvd or external hd, and at most, steam will just need to repair the files with a minimal download.

you mean the GCF files? I have those, 7 that total about 4.32 gigs, that's why I'm trying to find a way around re downloading the stuff I already have. I know it's just a matter of a few registry entries that need to be added, or something pretty basic. I just don't know what

Well ideally, before reinstalling XP, in Steam you would right-click the game, select Backup..., then you can select to split up into CD, DVD, or custom size files for burning, then it backs up the game, so all that is required for reinstall is get the Steam client, double-click the .exe(s). Very nice. Why would I buy it from the store then?

But in your case.. since you are only left with the .GCF files you just need to get Steam to recognize you have them. They are essentially everything you need. Additional directories for in-game downloads, configs, etc are created when the game is ran. I just re-installed CS:S, DoD:S, and HL2DM from Steam backup files, and all it really did was decompress to the .gcf files.

So I would try: keep the GCF files in their original locations in your /Steam/ directory, load the Steam client, then since they are not on your Installed games list, try double-clicking the game(s) from the Not Installed list. While it is expecting to download the required files, it might recognize that you have them and simply apply any additional updates or just move them to the Installed list. It won't download things that you already have, so it might just be a very small amount in order to have it fully installed. If it attempts to download the whole game (i.e. it's not seeing your GCF files), I'd stop it and try to figure a way around it in order to save your bandwidth. Or see if verifying the game's cache will move it to the Installed list (if the option isn't grayed out).

And yeah, I'm very happy with Steam (and Valve) for the most part. I didn't get on to Steam until late 2004 when I bought Steam Silver, but even at that point I have had ZERO problems with it. And it's very convenient and offers good deals on games. There is quite a few new and good games for purchase now since I last logged on, and even better is some Steam-versions of Starforce games have SF removed.

didn't seem to work duragezic, it must be some missing registery keys, I clicked download and waited a few minutes it went to 1% so :( on that. Good idea though. Oh well, guess I'll just play something else

This will not work as we expect. I have tried countless times.

I revert to my original reply.

Steam sucks (in this area) enjoy your download.

why single out Steam in this area? If anything Windows sucks for having a stupid registery & shared files. Back in the days with DOS this was a non-issue. I mean I just tried to launch Oblivion and it's not detecting it as being installed. Steam is no different, and definitely no worse.

If I had my HL2 cd's (lost them) I could just install from the disc's with no problems, at least with Steam I have the option to download, with Oblivion I'm pretty much screwed because I lost the DVD for it.

Well I guess it's pretty obvious that you have to take better care of your stuff.

And in response to the haters: steam doesn't suck. It's a pretty good way to streamline patches, never require a cd past installation and only requiring the key once. The only part I can see disliking is the need to be online with single player games.

I got it working (sorta) deleted a .blob file and it fixed something. HL2 updated in 5 minutes, for some reason CS:S started updating at 53% which is better then 0.

I like Steam and will probably drop 10 bucks on Ghost Master and maybe try Out Run 2006. Neither of those games are anything I could find at a retail store I'm sure.

steam is a lot better and faster now-a-days. i remember when cs 1.6 was the only thing on steam and it was slow as fudge back then. i really didnt think steam would take off as much as it did and now they have a ton of games large and small for it. while i do believe it is bloated, it has progressed more than i could have ever imagines. now if they can hurry up with H2:E2 i will be a happy camper

It does work, and there should be NO problem doing it.
I recently reinstalled Windows, and all I did was download the Steam.exe from wwww.steampowered.com, and then installed Steam to the exact same directory as it had been (for me it was H:\Steam), and then ran Steam. ALL my games, ALL my mod and ALL the settings were the same. Didn't even have to type in my username, didn't have to download any updates to Steam.

Steam is the most excellent piece of software for getting back your games after you've reinstalled Windows, no need to reinstall loads of games, just the small file and it should work.

You don't have to be; you can start Steam in Offline Mode. Not sure how, but I know you can.

Windows has done more for gaming then Steam ever will.

Say what you want but pc gaming wouldn't be where it is without windows. It wouldn't be as bad as pc gaming on linux. Wonder if it would be better or worse then the current state of mac gaming.

Ghost Master was in stores... it's just an old game that nobody really played.

After I reinstalled Windows all I had to do is connect online with Steam and all my Steam games worked.
