I wish I had the same faith in Valve you do. I am sure they VERY carefully thought through every step of their move to release episodic content to increase the speed and quality of releases for the Half Life series, but we all saw how that turned out. >_>

True, but was that a blunder? The fan base is still in rabid "shut up and take my money" mode even years later, and in the meantime they got to concentrate on Steam, L4D and other highly successful franchises. Not saying HL2E3 wouldn't have been successful, but not releasing it or HL3 yet hasn't really hurt them.

If the Steam Box fails, that will hurt them, if nothing else due to the substantial investment they've already made.

Between AMD's Mantle and Steam OS, gaming as we currently know it has the potential to look radically different in five years time.

People nitpick. I swear it's just to be annoying/troll.

This has been a very awesome thread. The debate that's been going on has been very respectful for the most part, with a very few exceptions. Even people that disagree with each other have conceded points when made. Just because a lot of us don't see the picture you, and question it doesn't make them trolls. It makes them people with minds of their own. Please don't turn this into a flame fest... that's what other parts of this forum is for.

Consoles going x86 is also a huge change and I still believe a good change for PC gaming. As much as we hate it, consoles drive a lot of the development of the most popular games. Mantle potentially being tied into both consoles and PC gaming is something we haven't seen. Dice is using Mantle with Frostbite 3, if Valve goes and pushes Mantle with a new Source engine things really get crazy for me. Death of PC gaming has been greatly exaggerated and regardless of how I feel about the SteamMachines it's a very exciting time to be a PC gamer and a gamer in general.

So what's that thing coming out the center? Head crabs have 4 limbs, not 5. Is is the mind-dildo? Is that the part that actually does the head-raping?

It could be a head profile, with the headcrab already attached to a head.

All I know, is fuck those black headcrabs. Things gave me nightmares. lol
The fast zombies and their moans were disturbing.

CLEARLY Half Life 3 would need to be exclusive to this new OS of theirs.

I mean, that is a giant sledgehammer into the hearts of nerds if we don't play it, right!?

So just by putting HL3 onto it ONLY, sure they wont make $$$$$$$$$$, but they will sell their system just as they did Steam back in the day.

Valve isn't Microsoft.

I predict same day release or maybe soon after for Linux. I would like a fully OpenGL engine but in reality it would be a DirectX engine with an OpenGL translation layer.

The real question would be if it runs in OpenGL mode on Windows since Valve has found OpenGl to be better performing than DirectX even with the translation layer.

/speculation.

Extremely underwhelmed by those announcements. #2 is basically only a lame sweepstakes and 3 is a game controller. Yupdeedoo.

I'd be curious to see how the thumbpad things work in practice, but yeah ultimately not particularly intrigued.

That controller looks awful. Did they even test these with focus groups? No joysticks? Good luck having it work any better than garbage touch screen phone emulation of real controls. =(

According to Engadget, they are dual trackpads, so I am sure they will be awful. I can't view any real gaming related sites at work though.

HL3 has officially become vaporware to me. I've held hope as long as I can. All 3 announcements have been a giant letdown.

Just now you've lost hope? Wow, you've held on for so long. I would have though Duke Nukem Forever coming out would have been the breaking point. We can't even use that joke about it anymore. =(

Very cool. Very excited to see what each of these three things looks like in actuality. I'll be getting the game pad for sure.

The track pads are actually a great idea and remove a ton of the inaccuracy/problems that analog sticks bring with them. I can see it working out really well and being a lot more faster/accurate than a traditional controller with sticks.

I look forward to impressions of it when they start sending them out.

OK, so I am actually very interested in the controller and it's open source aspect maybe not 100% for gaming on a TV, but for other possible aspects of use.

I've yet to try anything in big screen mode specifically even though I do sometimes attach my PC to the TV to play games.

Well, that controller looks fascinating. I was about to call Valve out for the stupidity of the touchscreen (just like I have Sony and Nintendo in the past), until I read this:

In order to avoid forcing players to divide their attention between screens, a critical feature of the Steam Controller comes from its deep integration with Steam. When a player touches the controller screen, its display is overlayed on top of the game they’re playing, allowing the player to leave their attention squarely on the action, where it belongs.

OK, so at least they've put actual thought into this and recognize the problem. I'm not 100% sold but as it stands I'm very interested in trying one of these out to see how it feels.
