I was listening to the FLOSS Weekly podcast today and the guest, Jono Bacon, the Ubuntu Community Manager, hinted at the possibility Steam might appear on Ubuntu phone in the future. To be clear, he stated that Valve's relationship with Ubuntu (their choice Linux OS) might lead to that, but he didn't state any current development around that, and Ubuntu Phone development is still relatively early as there aren't any handsets shipping yet or for a while.

But this sounds exciting, especially with their goal of having Ubuntu applications and the interface (Unity) running seamlessly on desktop, smartphones, tablets, and television. A Steam app with cross-platform support (perhaps in different modes, so desktop users don't have a major competitive advantage), cloud content sync, and good multiplayer games would be a big draw for the OS.

I don't mean to get anyone's hopes up, but perhaps more interest could drive more developers to push the platform further. I'm hope I'm not the only one hoping for this to happen. That podcast interview sheds a light on the goals of Ubuntu Phone and their end goals, it's well worth a listen.

im guessing this would face the same problems steam on linux has: not only are there not as many games for linux, but it would also have to be made for ARM.

Im also praying for something like this because it does sound awesome. I think the best chance for steam on linux in general is for valve to offer some sort of steaming service for games that arent compatible for whatever system you are on - sort of like what Ive heard ps4 is gonna do with non ps4 games, since they purchased a cloud gaming service. This would solve a lot of problems for both linux and ARM on linux gaming.

As it is now i wish steam had a humble bundle-like app that would allow me to download games to my android phone, and officially support android. I dont see how this would be a bad idea for them.

Well, I guess this topic should be revived now that Steam has started the beta of In-Home Streaming... I think it would be great if they would provide mobile Steam clients that support this feature...

I long for the day where I can have a server sit in my closet streaming all of my games to any and all of my devices.

I don't think so. The reason Valve went with a Debian instead of Ubuntu for SteamOS was "politics" (Their words). I find it unlikely that they'll release steam on a Ubuntu phone.

Valve also gave Debian developers access to all of their games for free. ;)
