Wings of Prey is 50% off, comes out to $24.99

It has a demo on Steam.

DRM:

3 machine activation limit
From reading on forums, you'll need to setup a yuplay account to get access to some things in game.

It seems like a good game (I played and enjoyed the demo a few weeks ago), but the DRM kills it IMO.

I already have this game for PS3 but the DRM sent me running for the hills when I saw it. The whole point of Steam is to get away from that BS.

are you sure about the always online thing? i don't see it on the steam page.

I was wrong, I had gotten things a bit mixed up in my half asleep just waking up head. I was looking at a game called Rise of Flight that required online all the time, then I was reading a UBI hate thread and was posting this deal up at the sametime.

So totally my fault on that, my apologies.

Is this game sim, sim-lite or arcade? I'm sure difficulty settings will impact that, but they really can't change the overall feel of the game. How about some reasons to play this instead of IL2.

Download the demo and try it. The first thing that turned me off was the default 3rd-person view. Flight sims should be in-cockpit. Maybe there's another view (I didn't check)..but ehh.

Lol, I bought this game without realizing three things:

1. Crappy DRM
2. Crappy Online infrastructure (have to register through a broken english website)
3. It's the same game as IL2 Sturmovik: Birds of Prey on the consoles

Never realized that, and I feel pretty stupid. Curious as to why they changed the name to wings of prey for the PC version. That said, I'm not too bummed, it's still pretty fun, even though I've already played through the game once a while back.

First off, its not the exact same game as Birds of Prey but its been noted many times its a very similar game by the same people.
2nd: The online infrastructure is a giant FUCKING MESS! You have to register with an account, then start the game again, manually check for updates, open the website, shut down the program, log into the website, download a downloader (yes, you read that right) which downloads the actual patch at about 0.8GB. Once you get done with that you know what happens then? Does it autopatch? Fuck no! You extract and run it manually! WEEE!!!!!

Then once thats done you reload, find you need ANOTHER 0.8GB patch and do the whole fucking thing all over again. I have yet to discover what the online play is like.
Amazing that 10 years ago PC games could autoupdate easily with no hassle for the player, but now we seem to have forgotten about that.

Also, in the dozen or so other Wings of Prey thread we already have, we discussed the above issues many times.
It has 3 different mode: Arcade, sim, and realistic, and they actually do affect game play. And you can change cameras, really fucking easily, with one button or key press.

Seriously you guys, the updates are pain yes, but the game itself is well made, easy to play & customize and works fine in single player from the installation with no tweaking. If you cant figure it out you really dont need to play a fighter sim. Perhaps go back to your mindless console games.

EDIT:
Now the fucker wont let me access online mode. Everytime I click "Online" (in game) it freezes. When I use the Task Manager to get out I see a YuPlay box called "Activation". I enter the code and then......... nothing happens.
According to their site I do own the game and its activated.
Why no work? Am I gonna have to choke someone?

Alright, as it is, this game is pretty much single player campaign and skirmish. Dont plan on multiplayer. Good thing its half price.

Does this go for playing multiplayer as well? ;-}

As an okay shot, but a terrible pilot, I am going to let this one pass. Convuluted set up is definitely a minus in determining buying choices though.

Got the online working last night after I downloaded ANOTHER fucking patch. You dont even find out how many patches you need until after you download each one.
Once you get to 1.029 the game stops freezing at the Online screen, and you can get into multi-player.
Navigating the MP page is a huge hassle. Shame because they have about a hundred other games they could have used as good examples. When I searched I only found about 3 games online last night, but its possible I could have been using it wrong and theres actually hundreds.
The dogfighting was OK but like all online games the tiny little bit of lag found over the internet was getting me killed. Like other shooters I will have to figure out when the best time to squeeze the trigger is because it damn sure isnt when the cross hairs are in the targeting reticle. But the single player campaign is huge and theres a good skirmish mode, so I may not need it.
Using the stupid YuPLay is still a hassle. Valve should figure out a way to patch the game and play online within Steam. This game would be infinitely more successful.
For reference, it looks like you can have as much as 16 players on one team. Maybe more. That should make for some cool air battles. Theres free-for-all, team, bomb the landing strip and a few other modes.

man i was totally going to pick this up at this price, but after reading about the nasty drm, i'm not so sure now.

i wanted to get this only so i could play online. i don't care about the single player campaign.

what do people think who have played this online?
