Steam issues

I haven't used Steam since my last reinstall of WinXP, but I wanted to show someone Portal yesterday so I downloaded Steam, installed it, and tried to run it but it immediately crashes with a "Runtime Error!" message.

I googled around and found people with this problem when trying to launch a game within Steam, but not when trying to launch Steam. I uninstalled it, deleted the folder it was in, scrubbed what I could find in the registry, reinstalled, same thing.

Anyone have a thought?

Delete C:\%steam_directory%\clientregistry.blob

That will fix your problem, it fixed mine.

I can't find that file. On Vista 64. I've been searching and opening everything. I'm getting really irritated because I want to play some TF2, bt keep getting that connection error.

Sorry OP, more hijacking. 😱

it's not necessarily on your c: drive. you may have installed it on another drive?

Got it sorted, thanks to geoffry.

Never used the advanced search in Vista before, but it worked like a charm. Regular search couldn't find it.

I usually just delete steam.dll and that fixes most issues.
