Steam is using Starforce!

I purchased the new Steam release "Xpand Rally" - the regular retail version uses Starforce, but I assumed that the Steam version wouldn't use it, since it is on Steam and all . . .

Wrong. Starforce drivers installed! Boo Steam - bad, bad move.

Just a warning to all!

Probably not Valve's doing, it's all these guys:
Published by: TopWare Interactive / MicroMouse
Developed by: Techland (Poland)

They probably still wanted crapforce on there.

Be wary of developers/publishers in eastern Europe/Russia. They really seem to like Starforce a great deal.

So far just that game. I have CS:S, DoD:S and HL2 all w/ no starforce.

It doesn't. In fact, Egosoft is working on a patch that will remove starforce from their old retail version.

The funny thing is I got starforce from Chaos Theory a while back. Didn't even know it had it what it did. Didn't notice anything till I came across some info on starforce, and that's when I noticed my dvd speed drop. I don't mean it was slow I just realized it, it seemed to be fine till I found out it could be bad then it dropped. Was a weird coincidence.

I was issued a refund for the two games by Steam, but told that it was only a 1-time deal and normally would not be refunded.

Good job Steam - thanks for listening to your customers! :) Now just eliminate Starforce totally, and all will be perfect!

Are there any up-to-date Starforce lists? I thought Silent Storm uses it but I don't see it listed in wizboy11's link.

I was also thinking of installing the Spellforce disc that came with a video card, but it's another JoWood game so might also be tainted.

This is where Acronis True Image and a separate gaming OS install can come in handy: install, play the game, after you're done restore the pre-install image to remove the infection.

Does anyone know if Starforce is on the Dark Messiah of Might & Magic multiplayer beta?

Should have checked my link right below Wizboy11's :p
Direct Link to game list. Silent Storm is on that list.

The reason they put starforce on there is so you can't use the steam version of the game to figure out how to crack the starforce version of the game...not that it matters. I refuse to buy starforce games simply because they wont run in cedega.

After reading that article and some of the thread add me to the list of people boycotting Starforce protected games. Before I purchase any game in the future I'm going to Google both Starforce and that game. If it's a SF protected game it gets ignored.
