Bought half life 2 today. Installed it. No problems yet. When I try to run it, it tells me it is unable to connect to Steam. It seems like it's trying to update steam. I even disabled my zone alarm and I'm still getting the same thing.

Steam is temporarily unavailable, please try later

is what it says every time i double click on steam. Any ideas?

TIA

I don't know about you guys, but stuff like Steam just seems like the wave of the future. I mean, it's tied to the internet, so pirating it would be extremely difficult. It's only a matter of time before other companies start adopting programs like it.

IF they could get it working right, it doesn't seem to be a problem. But, all I know is, I'll be playing a lot less games.

I agree with you to a point. These moronic companies are going to start realizing that they're going to be losing a lot of money becaues of this crap then they ever did because of "piracy'

Check your firewall and router to make sure the appropriate ports are open. If that doesn't help, there are hundreds of posts on the Steam boards solely about connection issues. If all else fails, call Valve.

Steam, thus far, has performed extraordinarily well. It is fast, and just works (assuming your connection is set up properly).

I've forwarded all the ports that were in the support page. I've even set my pc as the DMZ. I've shutdown zone alarm and disabled Norton Antivirus. Is there a phone # for valve? I couldn't find one. I've also been going through the steam boards and no one has a solution for this problem. One suggestion was to delete the ClientRegistry.blob file and rerun it but it's still doing the same thing over and over.

It can't be done... however, I presume in the coming months some programmer will figure out a way. I don't see why it is that important, though. Once you register HL2, you can play it offline anyway.

I completely disagree with the bolded text. You're mad, and rightfully so. But if you're going to start making sweeping statements like that you need to realize that steam is still pretty new. Sure it has bugs, but they will be worked out. If you don't like content delivered over the net you had better get used to it, because that's the way things are going.

Also, from what I can gather, Steam wasn't created to attack piracy... at least that wasn't the primary reason. Rather, Valve realized that by delivering content directly to customers (which is finally possible thanks to many recent technological innovations), they couldn eliminate the need for a distributor and improve the distribution of updates/patches. Within a few years, just about every major software company will be doing the same. Hopefully Steam will remain ahead of the competition by continuing to improve.

Update: Well I figured a work around.

Background: Here's my network setup

Cable Modem --- WRT54G ----- (wireless connection) ------ WAP54G ---- BFSW411 (I think. It's the 4 port switch by linksys) ----- main computer

I have the WAP54G in bridge mode and it works for everything. I ended up installing Steam on my server computer which is connected via hardline to the WRT54G. That was able to connect and update fine. I then copied the whole valve directory onto my main computer. I then had to reinstall Half life 2. Now it works fine. I am able to connect to steam. They really need to get their sh!t fixed because this is ridiculous.

Glad to hear you got it working, but that's hardly Valve's fault. You are the one with the trainwreck of wires and switches... lol.

My network setup might be unique but it works for everything else. Only steam has problems with it.
