I havent had a problem with steam in over 3 years. You guys might look at your ISPs or something on your end. Runs just fine here on 3 different computers.

You're getting lucky.

There's been at least a few times in the last couple months when i've been playing with friends locally & online, & it's gone down.
For all of us.

Only Steam problems I have had are some sticky downloads (not starting to download properly) and the occasional speed issue.. though I can comfortably max out my 20 meg fibre optic cable connection if I need to download a few games again.

Never been a real problem.

Yes, for several hours the store cart wouldn't come up and when it finally did the purchase, Tombraider, didn't go through. Just a message to contact Steam Support.

Bought it for $50?! There's plenty for $15 - $25 in FST

What is so great about STEAM?

Why not just buy the actual game? Or does downloading it worth it to save the effort of going to the store?

Because I can go anywhere and still play all of my games without having to take 30-40 DVDs with me. :)

But you'll spend hours if not days re-downloading all of those games. ;)

For that first time sure, but that's just once (and it's definitely hours, not days).

I frequently move around between school/home/friend's house, and Steam is exactly the kind of system I've always wanted.

The major disadvantages of Steam are that it requires online connectivity and that it prevents reselling games. These aren't even drawbacks to me personally, so I like the service and prefer those restrictions over traditional DRM. I can see why people who like to resell their games would hate it.

Regarding the pricing comparisons, Steam usually charges close to full price in the US for newly released major titles, with the exception of their L4D sale (which was Valve's own title in the first place). The good deals on Steam are for the older/independent games that are sold at a large discount or in a package. If you like variety in your gaming it's easy to acquire a whole bunch of relatively good if dated games for not much money.
