Steam + Half-Life 2 + no internet = bad?

So I go through all the trouble of finding a copy of Half-Life 2. Going thru the 0.5hr install, I was excited to play the game... only to realize that I need to activate the product over the net using Steam... but I have no internet!!! So frustrating... what should I do now??

No internet, but posting to forums. 😕

edit: Anywho, you should have read the system requirements before purchasing.

Yah, you need the internet even just to activate it once.. after that you could always play offline but it has to be activated online.

Well you only need to log in/activate once. Surely you can find some way to hook your gaming PC up to the net just once?

yah how exactly does that work

It is easy. In our living room we have an uber gaming machine. That is all it is used for. My son has 20 games on it, my wife has the Sims complet everything, I've got FlightSim and about 20 gigs of downloads for it. This machine does not go online. No worries about letting my son to play.

I have my lappie, my wife has her lappie, and my son has a laptop that we all use for internet and general work.

then why don't you just hook it up to the internet this one time to activate HL2 and then take it off

EDIT: whoa i didn't notice you weren't the op, nvm

I don't mean to be a wise ass, but sounds like you don't have much to complain about.
"went to trouble to find a copy of the game and half hour to install it."
I paid $99 for my Collector's Edition.

Edit: come to think of it, you won't be able to activate it, internet or not, as the CD key is locked to your friend's steam account (the guy who still has the box).

For better or worse, this is exactly the kind of scenario that steam activation is meant to thwart.

In order for you to be able to play this game, you will have to hook your comp up to the internet somewhere, and log in to your friend's steam account using his steamid and password.

Brilliant, so let me guess, you didnt pay for it?
Steam is working as intended for this scenario, move along.

Guys is there any way to back up- Half Life 2, i need to format my hard drive and i want to have a back up of HL2 so i won't have to go through that Steam thing again.

Why did Valve decide to use Steam, why not just give use the CD's like how WarCraft 3 did?

open steam and look at the properties of the game you want backed up
there should be an option to backup local content

you can also simply copy all of the content under your steamapps directory which should contain a few+ gigs of .gcf files and all the sub directories of your installed games
The reinstall steam, close it down, paste the content back to its original location and restart steam

Steam is the Future .......WTF!!!:|

I hate it!!!

Why did Valve create it, cause of piracy? Its the most stupid thing i have ever heard/used.

We guys go out and pay $50.00 for Half Life 2 and then we have to go on the Internet so we can download the game we just paid $50.00 for??? WHY...This is BullSH!T....

How can anyone like this software?
Besides what if a person wants this game and they don't have internet, then what, is Valve only providing for the people that have Internet?

And i know that the no. of people that don't have internet is small when compared to the no. of users that have internet but still.

Meh...I think Steam is great. Valve let us preload HL2 before its release and since I purchased the game using Steam, I unlocked at midnight on the night of release and was playing it before stores opened to sell the retail copies. 🙂

"The radio station is giving away concert tickets to the 10th caller, but what about the people who don't have access to phones? Why only provide for the people that have phones?"

I value having Internet access over any and all games, and I love my games. Get a console, I guess. Or better, quit gaming so you can focus on resolving whatever's keeping you from getting online.

I have internet, my point is i don't like the idea of downloading the game from the internet, i just hope that if any of the good games that come out for the PC will require going online and downloading it to play it.

But hey thats just me.

You can still get your game on CD and install it from that, or you can go online to download it, but you will need to authenticate your game with Steam online.

Remember when their source (not a pun) code was stolen and they delayed the game for months because they had to rework the game again? That's why they have to go through more levels of security.. it's cause of all the hackers and crackers out there who steal intellectual property and software from companies that work hard to give you a good product.

I'm not a big Steam lover (and it does have its own security flaws), but that is the future for alot of games coming out.

If you don't have the internet, then you either won't play the game, or you'll beg, borrow or steal an internet connection somewhere to authenticate your game.. get used to it, it'll only get worse 😛
