So as of late I've been having some random crashes. When I say crash, I mean a cold hard lock up. Mouse stops, keyboard, everything. The hard drive activity light is steadily lit. Requires me to hold down the power button to shut off the computer, then turn on the computer. If I hit the reset button, the computer boots up and cant find the hard drive.

I reformatted today. And it seems as soon as I put steam back on the computer, it starts crashing again. I had left the on option of: "Launch steam when the computer starts." When that option was on, it would crash as soon as I booted the computer into Windows. I just uninstalled steam and everything seems to work fine now. I know its odd and hard to believe, but I can't figure it out! HELP!!

Doom 3 works fine, as well as other games and such. It also can't be that I have a load on my computer because I launched lots of apps simultaneously, and it ran just fine.

My specs are: AMD 1700+, Abit NF7-s, 9800 Pro, OCZ Enhanced Bandwidth 2x256mb pc-3500 (all non overclocked). OS: Windows XP. Hard drive: WD 1200JB partitioned into 1 10gb OS drive, and 1 110gb everythingelse drive.

EDIT: I re-downloaded the steam installer ~740mb and reinstalled. The minute steam starts installing, i got a cold hard lock. So I rebooted. When it got to the desktop, the computer rebooted itself. Now, i've disabled everything (startup wise) in safe mode, as well as deleted steam, and it still wont boot into windows. Just as soon as it hits the desktop, boom its dead. I NEED YOUR HELP GUYS!!! I can't have this computer screwed up!

I've spent my whole saturday trying to resolve this. I haven't done anything else. Spent? I mean WASTED.

Have you got the latest forceware from nVidia?

I've heard tons of complaints about Steam. You could always just go out and purchase HL2. It's easier to resell that way anyways.

Yeah, latest nvidia forceware drivers

I think I might have solved the problem

Someone on PC.Per suggested that I try another hard drive.. I formatted it, installed Windows, and installed Steam.

So far so good. No crashes yet. It's just taking forever to download CS:S. I bought it yesterday and I want to play dangit!

Did this really clear up your problem?

I have the same thing going. If steam is loaded on my computer, just about any 3d game will crash eventually. I've reformatted and reinstalled everything enough to know that it is steam crashing my system. It crashes doom3, Everquest2, aquamark. And, of course, it crashes HL2. My system is pretty new.

Athlon 64 3200
MSI Neo plat
2x512 crucial ballistix
audigy 2 zx
seagate 200 gb
antec 480w ps
koolance case.

My temps are fine, everything else runs with great stability.

It is hard for me to think that my hdd is causing my problems.

If anybody has any info on this, I would appreciate it greatly.
