how well will you like it when valve uses steam to start charging a monthly subscription like the RPGs do?

That is the only reason why they are going through the trouble of developing it.

Look in the config folders and you will see files there that will accept credit card info when the man says it is time to pay up.

One of the beautiful things about cs has been the large community as the game has been accessible to a large group as is has been playable on very old computers. This is no longer true with steam.

I've been playing hl/cs for 5 years now and running a dedicated server for 4+ years.
I find nothing easier or beneficial about steam. Only thing is it has been the only way to sample cs 1.6.

I've kept my server running cs 1.5 and steam-free and will continue to do so until valve pulls the plug on its wonservers.

I don't remember reading anywhere that they're going to force anyone to pay anything. I know there will be a pay to play option that you can pay for via steam, but I've never heard that they're going to start charging just to play anything Valve-related... like CS which is what it sounds like you are implying. In fact, I think I've heard the opposite... which is that the community will always be able to play mods for free.

The in game buddy list is great. The new server browser is decent. But steam makes me reenter my cd-key every time I exit. That is farked up. One thing I really like about cs 1.6 is being able to alt+tab out of the game and not losing sound.

What do you guys think about the the "new" aztec?

Do you think the internet will stay as free as it's been? Do you not think they would not like to cash in?
Do you have a signed contract that valve multiplayer will remain free?

I'm not implying anything. I am saying outright that it won't be long before steam is a subscription-only service, and yes, especially the ever-popular cs.
They're trying to keep it a secret Ollie, mark my words...

I remember reading an interview where Ming (Gooseman) said that no matter what, CS would always be free (this was around the time that CS went retail, and people were wondering if it would no longer be offered as a free HL-mod download).

hmm i never had a problem with it. But then again i only installed it once (and it went perfect, not a single problem), and only tried it for a couple of hours. I'm not a CS fan.

Steam is a piece of crap.

I hadnt played HL or any of its mods for a while. So yesterday I decided to update them all and mess around with it for a bit. I had heard bad things about steam so I stayed clear of it.

Then today for some reason I decided, hmm maybe I should give steam a try. Bad idea.

I had Half-life installed on my D drive, and me not knowing exactly what steam was I installed it on my C drive. After updating and converting half of my half life directory moved to my C drive while the rest stayed in D. I dont like programs moving my files around and messing with my directories.

Well then I upgrade everything in steam, but it takes way longer to load up games than it did before. So I decide I want no part of it. Well the way my directories were all messed up I decied to do a clean install. I dont like steam and wont use it till all of the non-steam servers die.
