Is there anything good about STEAM?

Just installed it, took me some 3 hours of fiddling to make it work at all.
Got download errors, program errors, said it required 750 MB of free space while I had ~1.5 GB, and it still didn't work.

In the end, I got it to work, only to find out it had foobar'ed everything I had in terms of shortcuts, scipts, etc.
Not to mention the fact that the GUI is absolutely horrible.

STEAM sucks :|

well 1.6 totally messed up my aim. I think 1.6 is a nub HS MACHINE! Theres no more skill to hs anymore, and the AK's spread is even worse. My aiming tricks don't even work well anymore, I found that just spray and lowering the reticle is better than burst aiming. Then again i need a new mouse, this wireless one freezes my reticle everytime i click... (logitech elite wireless)

I appreciate that Steam has been generate lots of updates for those bugs, so props to that. They still have a long ways to go in terms of reliability. Also, PLEASE CORRECT THE CHAT BUGS IN THE STEAMCHAT!!!

It may make playing CS slightly easier, but the terrible ordeal of installation more than makes up for that.

What is steam? I know it has something to do with CS, but I've been out of the CS loop for a while...

Steam is Valves new electronic distribution system for games...check out www.steampowered.com for more info. For the record, whilst I know Steam is still in its infancy it also put me off playing CS for good..every time I logged on to play I had to wait for sometimes up to 20 minutes for it to download the latest updates and patches, I don't know if things have improved lately but quite frankly I couldn't care less.

Steam is very stable for me now, however it was not the case in the beginning,as you know there`ve been lots of steam updates and about 95% of the bugs have beeen worked out.Steam is now accounting for more then 50% over the WON system, so won`t be long before Steam takes over completely.

I found best way to install Steam is the full version(over 700mb) ,once I had it running fine I deleted all the old HL/Sierra folder files since they are no longer needed ,even better is install it on a clean PC with no HL programs installed(I did this with my backup PC, I just installed Steam on its own, works great).

Makes playing HalfLife in general 100 times harder IMO.

Worst UI, EVER.

I installed it about a month after it was released. Install went smoothly and haven't had problems with it. Unfortunetly, I never use it as I haven't played online for a few months now.

steam sucks. Aiming is poor. im getting noobed badly. all they have to do is spray and they hit me. I used to laugh at noobs trying to spray me. I just take out my deagle and hs them. Ak bursting is nearly impossible now.

Yeah we'll you're lucky! Sometimes it tells me that OpenGL is not supported and that it sets itself to Software Mode and crashes. I have to reboot until it stops being an ass and lets me play OpenGL.

My installation of Steam was perfect, as I used the full install file. But, starting 2-3 weeks ago, every time I try to load up a game of CS the god damned piece of fvck tells me that my CD-key is FUBARed and I have to get a new one otherwise I won't be able to use it. Then I just click on Counter-Strike and put in the same damn CD-key, and it works again.

Piece of crap. Oh, and I agree that each new version seems to be more nubby. I used to get headshots with AK fairly easily, but right when I switched over, I found that only the first bullet of the AK burst was always accurate (when standing still)... the second could be right next to the first, or it could be 3 feet above it.

Piece of crap.

Yes, it does. Without Steam, it took me forever to connect to a server (no less than 20 minutes between searching for servers and weeding out bad ones). Now, I open Steam, refresh the servers, and I'm up an running in seconds. Beautiful.

Many people say the UI is suxx0rz :)... But its not that bad if only the damn thing worked. By the time i get connected to the server, i get a timeout... STEAM itself is very suxx0rz, but the UI is not half bad...

Does Steam let you play for free (i.e. you don't even need Half-Life)? I thought I heard that you could play Steam games (CS, etc) without even owning Half-Life but my friend was trying Steam the other day and he said it asked him for a CD-key.

Ona avarge, this is how long it takes me to start playing:
Start CS - 5 seconds or so
Navigate to online MP menu - 3-5 seconds depending on how many beers I've had
Filter and refresh servers - ~5 seconds
Find good server - ~ 5-10 seconds
Connect - 10-15 seconds

Total - 40 seconds in a worst case scenario.

Well, maybe the calculation is a bit rough around the edges, but you get my point, if it takes you anywhere near 20 minutes, you're doing something wrong.

Nope... it takes me, and everyone else I know for that matter, at least 5 minutes to download a complete list of servers. Mine takes a little longer on both of my computers. But thanks for telling me that I don't know what I'm doing...

I enjoy Steam and I'm sorry that you don't like it as much.

Funny, downloading the list takes at most 3-4 seconds, and pinging them takes another 5 or so seconds(of course I just abort it when the last 20-30 servers take longer than that, it's not like I'll be playing at servers that slow anyway.

Maybe your connection sucks?
Whatever the cause, neither me, nor any of my friends have any problems like yours.

Good for you... mine works great with Steam. It sounds like you don't know what you are doing with Steam. After all, you are the one that has issues with it, not me. Mine works just great. Couldn't be happier.

For those of you who like steam....

how well will you like it when valve uses steam to start charging a monthly subscription like the RPGs do?

That is the only reason why they are going through the trouble of developing it.

Look in the config folders and you will see files there that will accept credit card info when the man says it is time to pay up.

One of the beautiful things about cs has been the large community as the game has been accessible to a large group as is has been playable on very old computers. This is no longer true with steam.

I've been playing hl/cs for 5 years now and running a dedicated server for 4+ years.
I find nothing easier or beneficial about steam. Only thing is it has been the only way to sample cs 1.6.

I've kept my server running cs 1.5 and steam-free and will continue to do so until valve pulls the plug on its wonservers.
