This was THE card to have in it's day, until 3Dfx bought STB. STB was obviously on the right track with Nvidia chips, as look what happened to 3Dfx.

I bought this card three years ago, and it is still going strong in my GF's computer. Just installed the newest update from Nvidia, and it works fine. Nice deal for a good card.

I'd check out the G400's at newegg.com that are refurbs, they range in price from $25 for a 16meg to $75 for the G400 max, with the dual head Millenium at $45

To find them just do a search for G400 at newegg.com

I think the G400 is the latest major upgrade Matrox offered, so it should compare favorably to the TNT2. Don't quote me on that though.

The Matrox G400 should be much faster than a plain vanilla TNT. The G400 MAX version is about on par with a TNT2-Ultra, but it doesn't consistently beat the TNT2-Ultra (sometimes it does, sometimes it doesnt). A G400 is about on par with a TNT2. However G400 has extremely good 2D and very good TV-Out (if u get a Dual-head model). 2D quality on a G400 is noticeably better at 1600x1200@85hz than on my GeForce 2 GTS. If you're looking for decent 3D performance, you'll be better off with a G400 or G400 MAX versus the STB Velocity 4400 (which uses a TNT Chipset).

***Apologies... ***

This post shouldn't have been directed at the person I replied to , but rather on this thread in general. Let's try and keep on topic a bit. If you want to discuss G400's you should make a different thread.

Do you realize that you just tried to compare a $29 card with a $75 card? then you added a $100+ card at the bottom. It's one thing to suggest say a $40 card over the $29, but I'm not sure how your post was relevant to this deal ?

BTW- If you're going to spend $75 on a G400 MAX you might want to consider getting a Hercules Kyro II 4500 w/o TV-Out for $108.00 instead. Brand new card, and it is better than a GeForce 2 (on par with a GeForce 2 Ultra at times).

A G400 32Mb AGP card for $30 including shipping is a STEAL and
a way better deal IMHO than the STB Velocity 4400 at a higher price
(since you'll pay shipping on the 4400).

You can also get the dual head G400 Max 32Mb for $45.

Those are INCREDIBLE prices...Get 'em while they last.

Note that the G400 32Mb card at $30 is the OEM version that uses
SDRAM. The G400 Max version that uses SGRAM costs $5 more...

(These deals are all at NewEgg.com...)

When posting in this forum, one should always include the word REFURBISHED when discussing video card deals (such as the G400's) that are for REFURBISHED cards. People do care.

Floydian, who made the first reference to the Matrox cards at
NewEgg in this thread, said they were refurbs...I didn't feel the
need to reiterate that fact...Anyone who cared would have already
seen that...

lzpoof,

I apologize for comparing a $29.00 card to a $75.00 card, however, the comparison I was trying to make was the $29.00 STB Velocity 4400 16MB AGP card to the $30-$45 Matrox G400 cards. If you read the post before mine about the Matrox cards, they range in price from $25-75, so its not simply a comparison of a $29 vs. $75 card ... I thought people might benefit from comparison information (since it was requested) and in case anyone wasn't sure which to purchase. The comparison I gave still holds true. A plain G400 will beat out a STB Velocity 4400. It is on par with a TNT2. The G400 is refurbished, but some may not care about that.

I added the line about the Prophet 4500, only because it is comparable price wise to the $75.00 G400 MAX... which I apologize, since its probably not on topic for this thread. Never the less, my intentions were to help people make a wise purchasing decision before blindly purchasing a 4400 card when the G400 may be a better deal, if you don't care about the refurbished part.
