staying at a hostel...

My gf and I are trying to save money on our trip to NY. Has anyone here ever stayed at a hostel? I am seeing very mixed reviews on this. My first thought would be that these places are dirty....but I could be wring b/c I never stayed at one.

Yikes, personally if I were you, I would save money and use hotels.com or expedia.com . Nothing like the hell that is hostels in bigger cities.

The student hostel on the Upper West Side is quite nice for what it is. I would have no problems staying there if I was student age and low on cash.

If you've ever stayed in hostels then you know what you're getting into....


BTW.....the hostel is waaaaaay better than getting a cheap hotel in NYC. Those cheap hotels are absolutely disgusting!!!!!!!! NYC is legendary for the shitty low end hotels.

The hostels I have stayed at in Europe were great...not sure about NY though.

Hostels aren't that bad buddy...give it a whirl. If it sucks, then go home or go pay four times as much for a half way decent hotel.

How much are you willing to pay max per night? Just use Priceline.com and put in your max price for the Upper West Side or anywhere in Manhattan. A few times I had friends visiting and I did it thru priceline.com for $79-89 a night and got it at:

Many hostels in Europe, all good. I hear that the AYH hostel on Amsterdam Ave in NYC isn't so bad.
