I am building a new machine and when I install an OS I am not sure if I should upgarde to Win2000. I am currently running Win 98SE and I am pretty happy with it. The machine will be designed to play games and be used for school work(programming, networking, ect..) Would Win2000 be worth upgrading to?

Thanks!

hows your patience? well, lets say you are programming for about 5 hours straight and you want to play som UT all of a sudden you are gonna have to shut everything down and reboot to 98. my suggestion, if you are an inpatient SOB stick wiht 98se, if you want the stability of win2k then drop some games.

I currently use Win2k as only windows OS. I dual boot with linux :D and I am quite happy with it. Win2k has quite a lot of overhead as compared to W98 so if your not willing to put 256 mb into the system then stick with 98. As for windows game performance 2000 is getting better all time. You lose some game performance compared to 98 but what's the difference between 110 fps and 90 when your v-fresh is only 85 hz. Nothing!!!!! You gain alot with your produtivity apps.

Yeah Win2k is the way to go!

DAM, it's not a problem playing UT in win2k. Nor almost any other game, for that matter.

The dual boot sounds like a good idea, but do I realy need 256meg of ram to run it right? I have 128 now.

I run win2k with 128 mb RAM. It's sufficient, allthough I could wish for another 128 mb.

Done the dual boot, found myself never going into 98SE. With DX -8 I get damn good gaming performance under Win-2K. Win-2k is my OS of choice. I always had problems getting UT to work under 98, change a BIOS setting, vid setting, anything & poof UT would crash. Always ended up having to ass around with UT to get it working again. I have not had that problem with Win-2K, in fact I had UT lock up (forgot to switch my fans back to 12v - DOH!) and a simple CTL-ALT-DEL allowed me to kill UT, gotta like that! (amazing what pre-emptive multitasking can do).

Hi there,
I would recommend nothing less than Windows 2000
The master of STABILITY!
but any way if you want to play games you can have win98SE
But you see windows 2000 offers superb support for games
and according to a recent survey many people preferred to play
in 2000 than in 98( idont remember the site )
