Stay with 2GB or go to 4GB?

Howdy,

I've been debating if I should install 2 extra GBs (1GB x 2 dimms) to my system. I currently have 2 GB already.

This is the issue, I'm using DDR1 and I have a dual channel memory controller. However, if I install more than two dimms (like 4) the performance degrades from DDR400 to DDR333.

My motherboard (the DFI RDX200 CF-DR) has the amazing ability to run 4 dimms at 1T at DDR400 with a BIT! of tweaking. But, will doubling my memory space increase my performance?

I have plans to turn the computer into a communications server, again however, communications applications like ventrilo aren't ram heavy. I also have plans of turning it into a media center PC instead.

My computers able to run Crysis, GoW, etc. but I'm trying to keep this system game capable for a few more years... So again, should I add more memory?

Right now I can overclock my 2 dimms to DDR500 which give enough performance to run Crysis, GoW flawlessly. Or I can upgrade to 4 DDR400 dimms with 4GB.

System Info:
MoBo - DFI RDX200 CF-DR
Ram - PNY (2) x 1GB Valueram (my motherboard can do amazing things to value ram)
CPU - AMD X2 4200+ (overclocked to 2500mhz with a 250mhz fsb)
GPU - ATI 3870 (overclocked)

Ask for any additional info...thank you

What has your computer been unable to do that you think more RAM will help with?

Problem solved, sorta.

Apparently my computers first and third slots are *damaged* anywany, so its impossble to get more than 2 x 1gb stick in it. However, dram ram drive strength allows it to magically post...but not stablely without sacrificing preformance. 1t >> 2t.

Anyway, I've been doing some research and I plan to go with the 3gb solution (2 x 1gb, 2 x 512mb). When I feel like dealing with the bios again.

Thank you for the help...
