What do I think?

HOAs that do that sort of thing ought to burn in the firey depths of hell after spending the rest of their lives in a PTIA State Prison.

But I understate how I feel....
 
meh. it's only one subdivision, right? seems to me like they (evacuees) wouldn't want to be put up with snobs anyway.
 
I'd like to see the language of that deed restriction. Sounds like they are stretching it a bit.

my best friend had to move into my parents house in houston so his extended family (refugees) could stay at his families
 
So... if I had relatives that were affected, this HOA would be telling me I couldn't let them stay with me until they figured out what they were going to do?
How compassionate. It would be poetic justice if their neighborhood got slammed by a hurricane.

The best thing that could come of this is if people just leave and destroy the neighboorhood and its "prestige"

HOAs are good in some regards. They can help maintain the beauty and property value of the neighborhood.

It's when they go overboard (and unfortunately frequently do when you get a bunch of clucking hens with nothing better to do) that causes trouble.

It's a double-edged sword. On the one hand, they can get a bit overzealous, as you can see. On the other hand, at least you have some recourse against the asshole neighbor with a mobile home on cinder blocks in the front yard and only mows his lawn when mars and venus are aligned, which he determines by gazing at a giant fiberglass stonehenge monolith replica that sits on his roof.
