22 year old college student fell asleep on his way to school...
He's fine. His shorts are dirty.

oh and aren't they supposed to have things at the beginning of guardrails to avoid this ever happening?

How long's it going to take you to fix that?
Fortunately, I don't have to. But the crew that has too will spend about 6 hours on it. There's a lot of broken posts that have to be pulled out of the ground.
His insurance company will be billed for it.

I don't think I have ever seen anyone skin the rail off the posts before.

I had a case very much like that a few years ago.

The next two vehicles that came along nailed the rail, with one fatality.

Those guardrails are designed to prevent a lot of those types of things from happening, but humans keep coming up with ways to bypass those features.

He should pay to have the guardrail replaced.
In California, he (or his insurance) would. I am not sure about Montana.
He'd be paying for about six employees, at least 3 vehicles, an end treatment, posts, blocks and 120 feet of guardrail. Assuming it all went smoothly, that's about six hours labor. Now add another two hours for setting up and taking down the traffic control.
I'd guess someone will be out around $4500.

These aren't old's pics. These images have been floating around the internet for at least a couple of weeks now.
