JonB - I believe I need to revamp the way DPAD stats are calculated... I don't think that I have the newest ... whatever those work units are called ... accounted for. I plan to revisit that as soon as the new server is in place an things quiet down a bit 🙂

soprry Geoffs but your questions are out of my range...But coolkid has always steered me right

Thank you CoolKid for everything😛

The router will be better than nothing. You can then set it to only forward port 80 traffic to the machine, which will help things out.

Interesting! Unfortunately (understatement, I'm sure) the server is running Win2K Pro SP4 🙂

What I meant was that you can grab an old PC and put smoothwall on it, couple of nic cards and use that instead of a router. 🙂

ahhh... I see... space is a bit limited... I've convinced my network admin to allow me to use some rack space, but I can't see that I'm likely to convince him for some more room in there! 🙂

What about ZoneAlarm... I used to use that but haven't used it in a couple of years...

I tried ZoneAlarm, but it didn't work well for me in an ICS configuration on the "router" system. It would probably work fine if you've only got one NIC in the system, as it worked very well on other's systems when there was only one network interface.

I much prefer Tiny Firewall over ZoneAlarm anyday. TF is highly configurable and has desktop and server solutions. Personal preference I know, but had too many problems with ZA

The only concern I really have when I put this on the new IP is that it's not behind a firewall at all. I was thinking of using a LinkSys broadband router (BEFSR41 v3) as the firewall... seems to work well at home... anyone think that is a bad idea or not enough security? I'd hate to get hacked the first day it's up!

While this router is real good, (use it myself) it offers minimal protection at best. It can block pings and such but you really need a decent firewall package as well.

While I don't disagree with the layers approach, I do think that a small home NAT box provides a decent beginning to a security plan.

I agree, a small NAT would be a good choice. There is space issues with adding another box.
