Depends on the definition of "confiscates". If someone leaves their laptop at security by accident - happens all the time - does that get confiscated & resold?

That'd be all kinds of terrible...

Except that site is not just stuff confiscated by the TSA. Most stuff confiscated by the TSA goes to regional stores. I've been to the one in Concord, NH (or was it Manchester?) and bought back a knife like one I surrendered to the TSA once upon a time. For like $3 too.

This site is fun, and has some really good deals.

Better that they sell it so it doesn't go to waste instead of just throwing it out or something. Government gets something back, people get an opportunity to buy their stuff back or just find things for good prices. I'd rather they didn't confiscate so many items in the first place though. Honestly, it's a bit ridiculous how draconian the TSA is. Pure security theater.

Sadly true. Illegal heavily discouraged to sell the real military ones though :(

Pretty much how I feel about it as well, what the government does with the drop in the bucket(ocean?) from sales is another can of worms entirely.

Yes. They made their idiotic system, let them deal with all of the consequences of it. The airlines seem to manage to send back your lost luggage.

When luggage is lost, its usually because the airline lost it so they are rectifying their wrong...we stuff gets confiscated, it's usually because the traveler was not aware of what he or she can bring on board, despite the fact that the traveler can very easily verify what is allowable and what is not.

My guess is they're easy to steal, and would cause a money draining grey market. If they're all illegal, it's easy to stop, rather than checking the pedigree of every case found on the block.

The heaters are another possibility, but with all the dangerous chemicals available to consumers, I'm not sure why they'd be a problem. AFAIK, the heaters aren't especially dangerous.

Apparently they're not "illegal" to sell, but Uncle Sam frowns on it, for whatever that's worth.

I can't vouch for the validity of the information on that site. Interesting none-the-less.

what do you think they would do if they don't sell it? I bet they will throw it out to a dumper, the american way.

In the few times I've had them tell me I couldn't bring something semi valuable. through security, I go back and hide it in a plant or something, and then retrieve it on my way home. :D
