So, knowing full well that the election was honest Cawthorne & the rest supported Trump's attempt to overturn the election supposedly in order to defend the Constitution, even after Trump sent an angry mob against Congress. The insane bastard we somehow elected President literally tried to seize power & they backed him up.
 
They are after them darn absentee voters. I guarantee you that over the next 4 years maybe 2 years that republicans in congress and republican controlled states will pass laws and enact restrictions limiting the use of the absentee ballot. Here’s what to expect... in order to qualify for receiving an absentee ballot one will need to take an dna test. Well, almost. One will need to prove that they absolutely can not vote in person on Election Day itself. Required to submit proof that the requestee will either be out of town on Election Day or incapacitated from undergoing surgery. Something drastic that would make voting in person on Election Day impossible. And if granted their absentee ballot, proof of existence would be necessary i.e. birth certificate, drivers license, an utility bill showing the correct name and current address. And if the absentee ballot requestee declares the reason why is that they would be out of town, then an hotel reservation and or airplane ticket would need to be presented as proof. And even with republicans enacting such restrictions, republicans still won’t be satisfied. Republicans will still seek to further restrict the absentee voter.
 
Dems should use the foaming at the mouth about "election integrity" against them. Give them their hearings but use that time to push through the John Lewis updated Voting Rights Act. Since you guys are so concerned about "election integrity" we want to make sure black people aren't being disenfranchised. We should also use this as a chance to enforce minimum standards for each state like 30 min maximum wait, mandatory paper backups, no more last minute polling place closures.

If I remember correctly Trump had an election fraud investigation because he was a store winner in 2016 and thought he should have won by huge margins. And then when the results came in he buried them and never talked about them again. Creating a non-crooked investigation into election fraud (which is only ostensibly what the republicans are asking for) might reveal some interesting results...

The GOP really is the enemy of democracy. Until they're split or courts come down hard on their nonsense the US is going to be in turmoil. And I wouldn't be surprised if they take back lots of seats in the midterms, despite their overall crappiness.
 
Trump did us all a favor by exposing the sheer absence of a platform from which to base their party's existence. They now have zero principles as a guide to win elections.

In the four years that the GOP has had to knuckle under to Trump's misguided unrestrained fascism, they've had to ditch any and all semblance of a party running on what they previously touted as some kind of ideological guiding light when all along all they were selling was lies, the same lies Trump exploited on a grand scale that exposed the party for what it really was: a scam operation, one big con job after another.

That's what's left of the party after Trump got done with it. Exclusively providing welfare for the wealthy while doggedly attempting to deny their own working class constituency a fair share of the bounty the nation produces has brought the party to where it now exists.

Let's be clear here.

All of what you just said Trump "exposed" has been obvious for close to two decades to any citizen with the gumption to kinda pay attention every 2 years.

The Republican Party just picked up seats in the House, barely lost "hard" control of the Senate, and lost the White House by 43,000 votes spread out over 3 states, meaning that a change in just 0.003% of the votes cast and Trump would still be your President after the House would have voted for him.

Not just that, but 2022 is a mid-term election, and without Trump making a complete shitshow of the entire country on a daily basis, Democrats need to vote like they did in 2018 and 2020 just to keep the House and barest "majority" in the Senate.

The best possible thing that could happen would be for the Republican Party to split into an outright ethno-fascist party that might win some House and Senate seats, while forcing the relatively sane Grifter-type Republican into the Democratic Party, where we won't get any real progressive policies but at least the country won't be stepping on its own throat to make the libs cry or whatever.

This country is absolutely in danger, and will continue to be, until the modern Republican Party is dead.

This is why the dems have got to kill the filibuster, add DC and PR as states, and expand to the House by at least 100 seats. Expanding the House fixes the massive minority rule in the House and helps with the EC problem a lot.

Dems, however, won't play the game, won't pass any meaningful safe guards for democracy and we'll be fucked in 22 and 24.

I think you're right if the Democrats continue trying to play the game like they did 2009-2010, "reaching out" to a party that is looking to lash out if given the opportunity.

Me, my personal shit-tier opinion: as a party, first bill, $10,000 to every US Adult, no means testing. Costs 1.8T, which is 1/4 of what's already been spent, and is, as of now, slightly LESS than the $1.9T bill they're pushing out.

First bill, one fucking page long, gives every US Adult $10,000. Not a loser in sight, and everything is alright...or at least better than it is right this second.

Second bill, $1T to States, cities, localities, First Responders, Hospitals, etc.

Then start working towards fixing everything else that's been broken for the past god damn 20 years.

But, the Democrats probably won't have the balls to do any of the first 2 that are NECESSARY, nevermind being sufficient, to saving this country as a functioning country capable of solving obvious problems that have obvious solutions.
 
As a Canadian, still don't get why photo ID is an issue. As stated in article, 36 states require it. If you don't have photo ID, your vote is a provisional ballot. So just a little more work to get your vote counted. It helps fight the GOP argument of mass voter fraud this way.

There are still black people in the US that can't get IDs because they weren't issued proper Birth Certificates when they were born in the South.

Also, in the US it is a pain in the ass to get a copy of your birth certificate, even if you have one. Born in Alabama then move to Texas and need a copy of your BC? Gotta drive back to Birmingham. People working multiple jobs don't have the time or money to jump through all the hoops.

Some of this is getting better, but still a bunch of issues. You have to remember a big chunk of the US purposely tried to make government not work for certain people for more than 100 years. And now they just try to make government not work at all.

mass voter fraud doesn't exist, and the people most likely to have issues getting a photo ID are a) poor b) minorities. so while "state-issued ID to prevent voter fraud" sounds great on paper, the real intent is to disenfranchise voters the GOP doesn't want voting. here is a quick ACLU brief on why voter ID laws are bullshit - https://www.aclu.org/other/oppose-voter-id-legislation-fact-sheet

if the state truly is going to require photo ID, then the state also needs to allocate funds to ensure that every eligible voter has easy and equitable access to obtaining an ID. it's the same way that GOP states like to close down voting locations in the name of budget efficiency, and the vast majority of those locations just so happen to be in highly populated and/or majority-minority locations. like when milwaulkee went from 180 polling locations to 5 in a city of about 600,000

Yep, I'm still trying to decide if they're that desperate or that racist or that stupid. Well, at least the Dems have found a way to defeat that kind of insanity, although it was by a very narrow margin of victory in the Senate. I hope the same level of motivation the Dems managed to come up with then will show up for the midterms and beyond.

In my state, we do not need anything to vote other than our signature after the initial one time registration process

Lets look at a state issued ID, which is something used during the initial voter registration process. So off you go as a teenager to get your id and then once again at 21 because you want to buy booze without the under 21 stamp on it.
State id's ID's need to be renewed.
ID renewals cost $$$
You've essentially created a poll tax on voting and mandated a state level instrument that not everyone actually needs for anything.
