EDIT1: YAY!!! Double Agent works fine now although the training level is still messed up.

Went to the official nvidia 97.44 driver. Thanks for the advice Jim1976.

EDIT2: Edited out my rant and yes...got Gothic 3 working. I found that trying to set IQ settings from within the driver messes things up.

EDIT 3: Okay did a fraps session in the first 10 minutes of level one for Splinter Cell Double Agent and the framerate is capped at 60. It won't go above nor below. This is with all settings maxed(other than the ones mentioned hereafter), trilinear optimization off, high detail shaders off, triple buffering on, vsync on, no AA since the 1.00 version doesn't support it and at 1280x1024.

My friend's 8800GTX just arrived last week. So far, no problems with his. I frequent other boards, as well, and don't seem to be hearing complaints to the extent of yours.

Perhaps there's other issues with your system causing some of the problems.

That sounds like bad G80... Run 3D Mark 06 and see if it doesn't crash. If it crashes then send it for RMA.

The Double Agent and Middle Earth problems (although this is not relegated only to G80) are well documented on the Ubisoft and EA forums. There were several threads about Double Agent issues posted (a couple by me) and just head over to the Ubisoft forums...loads of people there with issues. Gothic III is a new one for me. I THINK it was working with the 97.02 driver...I only updated to 97.44 since it was supposed to fix the Double Agent issues.

The card is stable. Ran 3dMark06 overnight and then ran the RTHDRL test for more than 12 hours. No crashes.

With 97.44 SC : DA runs ok with the option "detail max shader" OFF. If you leave this option enabled then you 'll get flickering textures but NOT texture corruption, which was fixed.
With Gothic 3 everything works fine in my system,no problems whatsoever..
Sry I can't help you with Battle for middle earth I don't have the game..

Surely something's fishy with your drivers remnants from older versions..Pay special attention to uninstalling/installing the drivers.. It seems to have much greater importance with 8800 than we used to with previous gpus..

I suggest you do the following..

1) Uninstall NVIDIA driver using one of two methods

a) Control Panel - Add/Remove programs - Select NVIDIA Drivers - chose "remove only the following" and select "NVIDIA Display Driver"

or

b) Right click on desktop screen/Properties/Display Properties/Settings/Advanced/Adapter/Properties/Driver/Uninstall

2) After uninstalling the NVIDIA driver, reboot into standard Microsoft VGA driver mode

3) Go to Start > Run > and type ?regedit"- select HKey Local Machine/System/CurrentControlSet/Control/Video and delete ALL keys. Also go into HKey Local Machine/System/ControlSet001, 002, 003 (if they exist), and delete any keys down the /Control/Video paths similar to above.

3) Install NVIDIA 97.02 or higher driver

This should clean up driver remnants and provide a clean installation, yielding proper performance.

Yes tried with the detail max shader off. The game crashes if I leave it on. I still get texture flashing and missing textures with the option off. Gothic III WAS working for me with the 97.02 driver...but doesn't work for me with the 97.44(As soon as I start a new game I get sound of the Orcs fighting and jsut a small splotch of texture at the top of the screen with the rest being just a black screen).

I'll reinstall the driver following your procedure and report back. Thanks for the info.

Question : Why do ppl use modded drivers when the backbone of the official ones is still very buggy?

This is NOT recommended and I wouldn't try any of the 3rd party drivers until the official ones will come at the well known standards..

Yeah that's why I'm gonna try the official Nvidia 97.44s. I was running the official 97.02 driver before.

Sweet, good to know G80 works with SC--DA now.

Training levels aside, what are your numbers like thilan29? Good frames, bad frames? Will the official drivers allow you to keep the "detail max shaders" on and still maintain proper functionality?

I'll do a fraps run and give results a bit later. And no, detail max shaders is off. The game crashes for me with it on.

Will post some screens later.

Is there some way to get rid of the 60fps cap?

Yeah probably, that's why I asked if there was any way to get rid of it by maybe editing some config file.

What settings are in drivers? High Quality? Or Quality? Cause I'm still getting graphical glitches. Plus, Halo runs terribly with these drivers...

Only thing I forced in drivers is triple buffering, vsync, and HQ texture filtering.

I'm running version 1.00 by the way...Haven't updated to 1.01 yet so I have no AA. I haven't tried forcing that through the driver.

there is an issue with SLI

sometimes when I cold start (power up) SLI does not work.
I notice this in COD2 because instead of 55-60 fps I get the performance of one card, 25-30 fps.
its really annoying because it requires a restart to get it going.
stupid drivers I hope they fix these bugs soon.

edit
my fps is also halved in every other game not just cod2. its just more noticeable in cod2 cause my frames are so low
