There is a special offer for the Starwood "BVG" card, you get 4000 bonus points after first use of the card!
No annual fee first year, only $30 afterwards. You earn 1 point per dollar. 1 point = 1.25 airline miles!

starwood points are great for hotel stays at high-end hotels like W, Westin, St Regis.. 3000-4000 points can get you a free room that normally cost $100+/night

BVG is still good for printed advertisings. so this is a good card to have.

Everyone will correct me if I'm wrong, but all BVG is for printed ads only now. I have the Gold Card, and I remember that ended sometime earlier this year to pricematch to sites.

You might want to call and double check on BVG on those cards. I have the Gold Business card, and was told a month ago that I no longer have ANY price guarantee with my card, even to print ad!

I don't know about the Gold Business, but the regular Gold Rewards card still has it:

I have the Starwood card and yes, it's only for printed ads only. There are only 3 cards that I know of that still BVG internet prices. The Costco Small Business Card is one of them. I can't recall the other 2.

BVG aside, this card is great for the Starwood points. It's easy to redeem them for free nights at Starwood hotels.

I think some people have had successes pricematching to online stores using chase's lowest price guarantee program. but the claim process for that program is quite complicated. You have to wait for them to send you a claim form.

officially, amex bvg stopped pricematching online stores. however, some still report success pricematching online stores sometimes.

in my opinion, amex's bvg is proven to work well. it's just that no more online store pricematching allowed. it remains to be seen just how good the chase LPG(lowest price guarantee) program really is. so far, the complain is the process is too complicated and may not always work.

Category 1 hotels, 3000 points weekdays, 2000 points weekend
Category 2 hotels, 4000 points weekdays, 3000 points weekend
Category 3 hotels, 7000 points
Category 4 hotels, 10000 points

Category 4 hotels are typically $300+/night. such as the high end Westin and W Hotel
Category 3 hotels are typically $200+/night
Category 2 hotels are typically $100+/night, such as Four Points(also part of starwood)
Category 1 hotels are typically $60+/night

There is a cash+points promo that ends nov 30,
Category 1: 1200 Starpoints + $25 US Dollars = 1 Free Night (asia pacific region only)
Category 2: 1600 Starpoints + $30 US Dollars = 1 Free Night (asia pacific region only)
Category 3: 2800 Starpoints + $45 US Dollars = 1 Free Night
Category 4: 4000 Starpoints + $60 US Dollars = 1 Free Night

I get PC Photo magazine (freebizmag) and it's great to use to PM using this card. Just got an approval letter for a PM today to an ad in the magazine. They don't issue checks anymore, but do a direct credit to your amex card.

So it still works...

To earn the other 6000 bonus points, you need stays at starwood hotels.

You can earn the "stay" bonus points with even award stays OR stays reserved through priceline/hotwire! Just use the starwood credit card to pay for in-room incidentals. 1000 bonus points for the first stay.

Almost all frequent flier cc's have an annual fee.

$30 is a lot when you're not sure how many of those rewards you actually will be getting. I'm a student, have had my current credit card since 2001 and still haven't spent $20,000 to recieve enough for a plane ticket. That would be $90 i'm out of already, not to mention that I could be using that $90 for other things in the meantime. I'm sure it'd be a great card for me when I finish up with school and have more things I can pay for with my card, but until then, $30 a year hurts the deal for me.

although they aren't anywhere near as good as the Starpoints AmEx, i know a couple of no-fee cards which can earn miles or hotel points.

Amtrak MBNA card: earns 1 Amtrak point per $. Amtrak points can be converted to several Airline and Hotel partners, as well as gift certificates.
Hilton AmEx: 2 HHonors points per $.

That said, my Starpoints AmEx has been my primary card for almost 4 years now. I've never even used the BVG; it's other perks have been enough!

Very true...but does anyone know for sure if schools accept credit cards for tuition payments? I've heard for some schools you can...You could possibly rack up a $|-|!7 load of points charging dorm/tuiton/books...
