He may redeem himself somewhat if he actually makes some clone Jedi and uses them to battle the Jedi. Also, at the rate he is going he is going to leave a huge hole between eps 3 and 4.
I thought the "novel base" consisted of novelizations of the first three movies (i.e., Eps 4-6), which were made from original screenplays, then whatever yarns people spun off from them. AFAIK (and I was a Star Wars fanatic as a kid), the movies predated the novels, and as the creator of the franchise he is clearly free to ignore the novels (although they couldn't possibly be as dreadful as what passed for a screenplay in Ep 2 - I literally don't know that I have EVER seen a worse movie, and I've seen many hundreds).
