Startup Files & Temporary Internet files

I am running win 98 on a PC and I went into the msconfig command window to look at the start up files. Well there are like 30 of them in there, most of which I have no clue about.
Well I have a couple of questions:
How can I find out what each does before I delete them and
What is the safest way to get rid of them? Should I just track down each file as listed in the description and manually delete them?

Second Issue: I was wondering how come I cannot delete ALL the files from my Temporary Internet files Folder. I go in and choose the option to show all files (including hidden and system), select everything and delete. However, when I go to the properties of the folder it says that it is 70MBs with over 1000 files in it. Any ideas/suggestions?

Thanks

Rule of thumb for most things in the startup for MSCONIFG: if its from the windows\system directory, its usually important. If its from a C:\program files, it probably not.

You can always recheck it to run again if something is required upon boot up.

About your internet temp problem: do you have IE, or Outlook up at the same time. I was also download a spyware remover program as well to make sure nothing is being protected etc.

3rd, why are you still using Windows 98?

To delete the Temp internet files, you should be able to do it thru IE. Goto Tools, INternet Options and click on delete files. Its that simple.

As for the startup files...what I usually do is creat a separate folder in the desktop and cut and paste all the startup files and dump it into that folder. When I reboot and once I get into the desktop, I just click on the startup icons on the stuff that I need.
