Startup error messages - XP sp2

Trying to help my neighbor with their p/c issues. At one point couldn't even boot...but was able to clean up alot thanks to folks on this forum.

One stubborn problem that won't go away, even after Googling and running Spybot as advised. The following is still hanging around:

"Error loading DOCEOC16B1"

"C:\Windows\CFGMGR52.DLL - Module could not be found"

" Error loading E6F18738.DLL"

Any ideas guys??? Thanks in advance.....😕

You might try HijackThis and plunk the output into http://hijackthis.de for analysis. Run HJT in Safe Mode With Networking (assuming they have a router to provide firewall protection?).

What antivirus product are they using, exactly?

Well.....now they're using Nortons....but when I was asked to get involved, they were running an outdated McAfee subscription. As I had mentioned, they couldn't even bootup...I had to take their HD and slave it to mine where I ran my Norton's against it. Cleaned up alot...to the point where it could bootup once reinstalled back in the original CPU. Then Spybot which picked up a ton of stuff too.......so we're just left with these stubborn messages.

By "exactly," I mean what brand and also what version. Norton 2000, 2001, 2002, 2003, 2004, 2005...? 🙂 Hopefully 2004 or later, so it can use the Expanded Threats in the antivirus definitions. But you might want to get a second and third opinion. One way is this: scan.txt <---Right-click > Save As and follow the directions.

Another way is with online antivirus scanners: some listed here. If you're working against spyware, add Microsoft AntiSpyware beta to the arsenel and do a Full Scan with that too.

Also do the HijackThis thing I mentioned. If spyware is a repeat problem with them, you need to do some education about "all that glitters is not gold" and get them to use Limited accounts for their daily-driver usage if at all possible, not Computer Administrator-class accounts.

My co-worker and I created a program we call "Nectar-Clean" that we used to help clean machines that we worked on. It basically safely goes through your registry and displays item by item everything that starts up when your computer does. That way, you can go through and delete anything that doesn't need to be there. We also put in a function to reset your browser settings and clear all you caches and unnecessary items. It works on all versions of windows and removes cache and junk from ie, navigator, and mozilla. If you would like to try it, send me your email address and I'll email you a copy. It's really a great program and we've never had a problem with it, after over 1,000 uses. Even gets rid of the about::blank problem that went around a while back.

Any way, let me know. I'm sure it could help.

mechBgon.....They have Norton's 2005. It's actually a bundled product....but it's not SystemWorks....something else that I can't remember right now, but it includes NAV, PopUp blocker, Firewall and a few others. I thought about the Microsoft Beta product....will probably give that a try. Thanks a ton.

engineereeyore......Love to learn more about your program. Please advise.
