Starting to go for run's....some advice please

I am not active and feel as though I should start. Am a smoker. How should I go about starting to run..... ie. what distance should I start with, should I push myself hard at first, or take it easy.

I really don't want to keel over with a heart-attack on my first day out.

take it slow to start off and don't go too long. I would start with jogging.

One day during the summer I jummped up and thought I'd go for a run after having not done anything for MONTHS.

I was puking in no time

stop smoking.

i wouldn't push it too hard at first or you will get sore and loose your motivation for the next few days.

i would aim for a mile the first time you go out. if you can't run the entire mile, run as far as you can without stopping, then walk a little, then run, then walk, etc.....but finish the mile.

start by just walking outside or on a treadmill to keep a steady pace for a while.

I plan on quitting....eventually. Probably sooner than I think.

I agree. Do one long walk - like 18 holes on a golf course. Just to get your muscles going. If you have been sedentary, this might be enough to give you sore legs. Wait 2 days for the stiffness to go away. Repeat as often as necessary until you are no longer sore. Then start jogging slowly. Gradually increase the pace to your final pace over ~3 weeks.

if you run with an ipod, get an alternative set of earphones (or anything other than white).. whites are asking for a mugging :D

Dude, if you are going to continue smoking, what's the point in running? Stop smoking and start running at the same time and you will become healthier. Otherwise, it doesn't seem worth it.

I am an avid golfer and get out at least twice a week. The walking part I can probably skip.

Weight issue. Beer seems to be getting the better of me. I love beer.

If you haven't been active for quite a while, your best bet is to start with light intervals. So... for example, light jog for a minute, walk for one, repeat. After a while, you can start to build up to more jogging/running and a smaller portion of walking, and later 100% running. But at the beginning, take it easy.

Ok, then just start with a slow jog. I'd say most people could do 2 miles in ~20 minutes (that is a walkable pace if you are fit, so it isn't a tough jogging pace at all). Then gradually increase that to 3 miles in ~30 minutes. If you aren't winded by that, then try running a bit halfway through the 3 mile jog. Only when that is comfortable would I really go for running.
