Starting a fund

My friend is really ill with cancer. He's in his mid-20's, and it came on suddenly.

A few friends want to start a fund for donations. They don't need to be tax deductible, but we'd like a way that people (friends, family, etc.) can donate money and we can have the money sent to him for his care.

What's the best way to do this?

What kind of cancer? There are established non-profit organizations for certain types of cancer (e.g., the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society) that can help third parties assist someone in need.

A website you might want to visit is http://www.lotsahelpinghands.com/. When a good friend of mine came down with Leukemia a few years ago (terribly sad story with a very sad ending), her best friend used that website to organize her community, friends, and work colleagues into a giant support group. We brought her family food, organized hospital visits, organized a *huge* "light the night" group in support of her (raised ~$100,000k in one day), etc. Great website and a great organization.

Best of luck to your friend. Cancer is a bitch. And I mean that in every sense.
