Started taking SCUBA lessons yesterday

1 lesson and I'm hooked... I can't wait until we do our open water dives. I've got classes for the next few weeks. Getting the certification through NAUI... I'll be diving in the St Lawrence this summer, as well as a few lake dives in the area

When I'm done, I'm going to have to talk my wife into getting certified. My kids already want to do it too (but, I'll wait a few years before I shell out the money for them to get certified.)

Anyone here certified?

I went diving once in Hawaii- didnt get certified though. There's a "learn to scuba" place that I drive by every day to get to my appartment that is sooo tempting. I loved scubadiving in Hawaii. I doubt I coulc afford it though- how much $$ are the classes setting you back?

$425 for the classes - includes all the classes, equipment, air, etc. The only other costs will be for a pair of prescription swim goggles, and the cost incurred in 2 or 3 of the open water dives. ($20 for access to one of the dive parks, $35 for the boat when we go dive up on the St Lawrence seaway), plus travel expense to get to the open water dive locations.

Hmm...thats actually a bit less than I was thinking.

i got certified open water 2 around 14 years ago so it is probably expired by now. we went to crystal river fl and swam with the manatees. that will always be one of the greatest experiences of my life.

i was certified through the ymca and it was pretty cheap.

It doesn't expire. If you no longer have your C card you can get another one through the YMCA. They will have a record of your having taken the class. You will have to send them a license sized photo and there may be a modest charge. Check with the aquatics director at your local Y.

I have a friend who is an instructor who will do it for free for my wife and I (excluding pool rental, etc.). Finding the time is the problem...we did one of the quick classes on one of our cruises and loved it, but we know getting certified would be an even better experience.

I got certfied in Australia (Byron Bay to be exact), then headed up to the Great Barrier reef and took advanced training, including a night dive. I thought I'd be petrified, but it was my favourite of the bunch. My wife and I also did some diving last year in Cozumel, Mexico.

Good stuff.

Sorry to bump an old thread but I found out a co-worker is a Divemaster and isntructor at a local scuba place. I can get certified for $300 plus costs of getting into parks or whatever. THey do the classes in 2 weekends and then you're done. Problem is I'm in WI so the ocean isn't real close by and with a 10mo old kid we won't be taking any major vacations any time soon so I'd be left with quarry and lake michigan diving I guess.

If I can get some other co-workers to go I'm hoping we cna get a discount and then just might have to do it.

What's the difference between NAUI and PADI? I've only heard of PADI before.

I'm taking scuba classes that are through a PADI scuba place. As far I as i was told by my intstructor, well, he didn't really asnwer my query suffice to say that you learn some of the same things but the teaching methods are different.

I really can't say. I"m hooked though as this counts as a credit for for college. I'll probably be doing some dives in quarries and such in the area. I think i need another cert to do some wreck diving b/c of the depths.
