I'm assuming you are getting the Optiplex 340. Here are my thoughts. Do you really need the Quadro 2? From benchmarks I've seen the Quadro series has seriously underperforming cards for their price - the ATI ones might be better depending on your use. Can you get the 21" monitor elsewhere. I've seen two Dell 21" monitors and I've been quite unimpressed. The top P1130 model with that machine suggests an optimal performance of 1280 x 1024 @ 85 Hz. A 19" monitor is good at that resolution, but 21" monitors can perform quite well at 1600x1200. For the money you will be spending, I'd personally like a better monitor. Does that $2200 include a DVD (it does from what I see in Dell's prices). I'm not sure what you will need a DVD for...

You guys are spoiled! I am currently using a 1.5 Ghz Gateway, but honestly for what I do at work a P2 would be adequate as well. The faster the better, but even 266 Mhz would suffice for Web surfing and Word.

266 is not fast enough to nef at ATOT. FuseTalk HTML is fairly complex. :)

I am a lab User consultant and I get to use a Dell with a 2.0 GHz P4, 1 gig of RAM, GeForce 3, CD burner and it is on my colleges connection. I just get to sit there all day and watch DVD's, play games and surf, and when some does come in I have to show them how to save and print. If only real life would be like this and I would get paid 80 grand a year, oh well.

Get this, I'm the sysadmin of a small office (~25 people). Anyway, new guy got hired and I'm told to set him up with a workstation. So I goto our company's Dell page, get one all ordered, goto the manager for approval (around $1,100) and he gives me a quizzical look.

It seems they wanted to me to dig one of our old P-166mhz boxes out of storage and let the new guy use it. I asked if he was doing email or soemthing simple. Nope.

Seems he's one of the new statistical analysis guys but due to tax purposes and some memo from corporate, there will be no knew systems purchases for analysts. Makes no sense to me as they crunch massive numbers.

BUT!!! Here's the good part, I convinced my manager to give the new guy my current system (p3600, 256, 20gb) and let me get a new one (since I'm not an analyst). I got a brand new system (single 2.2ghz, 512mb, 80gb, gf3, etc.) as well as thanks from the analysts who saw me prepping the crusty, dusty old p166 as well as my supervisor who added a note to my file on my ingenuity and problemsolving abilities. I'm still in shock (not really) but corporations make no sense.

<< Don't forget, that GeForce4 ti 4600 is CRUCIAL in your computer. According to nVidia it slices, dices, juliannes fries, changes the oil in your car, walks the dog, AND increases your productivity in MS Word and Excel by over 300%! Just think of the money it'll save the company! That kind of money saving decision could get your boss promoted out of middle management up into high level management. Heck, maybe you should suggest he upgrade every computer in the company to GF4's. It's a slight investment up front, but you could save BILLIONS! >>

lol, the manager will buy that :p

Dude....

I have the same setup at work, except with a 10GB hd.

The only way you can configure this PC is to buy a new one, it's slow as f$ck.

hot damn, I need a job like that. I think I'd be happy just clicking around the Dell site watching the price total go up. :)

Props to Jarfykk, way to make it a good situation for you and that new analyst.

Back to programming. damn.
