Lets put it this way. I can't get commercial broadband out here. I know someone who owns his own ISP in Texas and is transitioning off his old entry-level hardware to some new stuff and says he'd donate it to me if I could use it to get myself off this evil dialup. I know I can get some T1 pipes in here, and 802.11b/g wireless networks are easily adapted to WISP duty.

The guy in Texas says that he's probably the only broadband ISP in the country turning a profit (And a NICE profit at that). What do you guys think? Business couldn't be a market for any startup I do here, it would have to be home users in need of tremeandous speeds (i.e. warez) and maybe some CoLocing.

How much is the range on those wireless cards? I'm assuming it won't be broadband speed. Also, wouldn't you want to give each user his/her own ip address?

you want to help out the warez community by offering quick up/down speeds? do you know what warez is?

Actually, the donated hardware from Texas takes care of that. Range on the wireless after modding both ends is probably somthing like 30 miles when you take into account that this place is on top of a big'ol hill. Realistically, 10 is to be expected as a solid connection ~5mbit at the card.

As for the IP addresses, therein lies the beauty of the T1 - you get a freaking ton of them.

Help them? Fsck no, that's dirty. If the end user choses to use their bandwidth for royalty free pr0n, that's their thing. If they chose to steal some software or distribute it, and get caught, I ain't tellin the feds 'no'

Just what I was thinking. Do you realize how much bandwidth warez people consume. It would be impossible to turn a profit.

You get a ton of IP addy's with a T1? I think not, if I remember correctly you get one which you can submask into alot.

Also my old ISP up in Washington state was turning a nice profit. Not sure where you friend is getting his info about ISP's not making money.

royalty free pr0n would be themselves doing it, or have i been missing free pr0n all these years? i thought you had to pay for pr0n also.......unless you get it illegally....

Do you know how few customers you could support with just a single T1 line? Not many unless they're dial-up (which is not the case, if my understanding of your ramblings is correct). A single T1 line is what, 1.54 Mbps? Which is in the vicinity of 200 KB/sec?

Exactly. My cable connection is faster than that, and I'm the only one who uses it.

i get a reliable 3Mb/s from cox in AZ and pay ~$40/month. you say you can get some T1 pipes in there, how many are you talking? they are fast, but in todays world, not that fast.

you are going to bill you customers a ton of money to even be partially in the red, and don't think about the black. no offense, and i mean no offense, but in a remote area i would get satellite instead of your company because you are very small. what about uptime? your equipment needs to always be up, no downtime.

also, what do you consider tremendous speed? is your comparison compared to a dialup? if you get 1 T1, which is ~200KB/s then you could get 40 people on @ 5/KB/s which is dialup, 20 people @ 10KB/s, 10 @ 20KB/s.

i know if i wanted a business T1 through cox it would be ~$1000/month in a very populated area, surrounded by lots of retail. you say you are way out there, so i am assuming it would be more expensive for you. you will have to charge people an arm and leg to go just a little faster than dialup.

please correct me if i am wrong.
