Start drinking coffee for work?

I work very early hours and I get exhausted mid day.

All of my coworkers drink coffee but it always made me feel on edge and the cost adds up.

Drinking cold water always helps but I feel lethargic at work and tired. My energy level is low. Are the benefits over costs (financial and health) outweighed?

get more sleep and eat a proper breakfast? coffee doesn't work as intended on me, but enough sleep does.

A nice healthy breakfast with protein and decent carbs will do.

Avoid high cal lunches with tons of carbs and fat. Bring healthy things to snack on. You're going to want them if you drastically halve your calorie intake for lunch.
Carrots, celery with peanut butter, yogurts, popcorn lightly salted.
If you need something heavier, granola bars. Trail mix helps, but watch out for mixes laden with sugary items like too much m&m's and clusters of God knows what.

This will teach your body to efficiently breakdown your intake, and will speed up your metabolism.

That being said, coffee will help, but it's merely a part of a bigger solution.

note: I am not a doctor but...

you could try a vitamin B complex maybe? it's what they put in 5 hour energy(well, that + some other crazy junk + caffeine)

also: make sure you're getting 8 hours of good sleep.

Peppermint gum helps keep you awake while you are chewing it. Just don't chew any if you have to deal with clients because it can be construed as rude.

If you want the caffeine for cheap and don't want as many restroom breaks, buy some generic caffeine pills and a pill cutter. Generics are cheaper than the No Doz or Vivarin brands, and are usually 100mg or 200mg per pill. The "average" 8oz coffee is 100mg, so you can vary your intake using a pill cutter.

Cocaine!

Serious answer: I find energy drinks better than coffee, or caffeine pills. coffee makes me have to piss constantly.

I never really drank coffee until I started working, and only because it was free. I wouldn't pay for coffee every day (if that's what you're asking), but if you can get it free, why not?

If I wasn't a lazy sack of shit and could keep up with it, I found an apple mid day did far more to wake me up than a coffee.

It's also healthier and cheaper.

The problem with caffeinated drinks (including the Energy stuff) is your body gets used to having it and throttles back. So you 'need' more. I have my bucket 'o Tea in the morning, and that's all.

Exercising regularly helps a lot

Eating a high protein breakfast, smallish lunch, and Healthy snacks - I'm partial to Cliff bars, personally. - is also good for staying alert.

go to sleep earlier

try eating lighter lynches

personally smaller more frequent doses of caffeine (like sipping tea all day) works better than coffee, which amps me up too much

Coffee is a vicious circle... it's a temporary fix that you have to pay back later. Although I like energy drinks, there is a lot of bad crap in them and they are expensive.

I used to take a 15-minute break when I was a dispatcher and go stretch/do pushups to wake up. Between that, enough sleep and a better diet, I think that would serve you better than trying to hammer coffee.

on weeks where i don't exercise, I'm at the coffee dispenser 3-4 times per day and feel like shit by the end of the day

on weeks where i exercise, I'll have 1, maybe 2 cups o' coffee and feel decent. I probably could get more sleep too.

exercise is your friend, sleep is too. it'll do a lot more than pots of coffee, and you'll feel a lot better

This is sage advice. Coffee and other caffeinated drinks are a trap. Your body builds up tolerances and you drink more to get the same effect, and the circle continues.

Try tea instead of coffee, going for a brisk walk or crunchy snacks. Cheapest would be to go to bed sooner.

True. What I start to do, every few weeks or so, is stop drinking caffeinated drinks altogether for a few days. Yea you'll get some of the withdrawal symptoms, but nothing a tylenol can't fix. Then once you drink coffee/energy drinks again, you'll get the energy again because your body isn't used to it again.

I typically do 3 weeks on/ 1 week off. Works well for me.
