Start Button covering multiple rows of taskbar?

Sometimes, I make my XP Taskbar two rows instead of one (especially while in portrait mode), but the fact that the Start button always takes only one row and leaves a huge empty space under it annoys me ... anything that can help me fix this?

Mine is the same way, I've never found anything that changes it (at least nothing built in, dunno about skinning apps...)

Somebody posted a rant about this in the arstechnica battlefield. Short answer - nothing can be done at this point in time. It's a UI oversight on Microsoft's part.
