I learned LOONNNGGGG ago not to listen to other people's reviews for a movie. Critics are like sheep, incredible stupid. 😀

I usually agree with critics, but sometimes you have to ignore them. If I listened to Rotten Tomatoes all the time, I'd never have gotten to see 'Vanilla Sky' and 'Snow Falling on Cedars', both of which have become movies that I truly, truly love. Now, I think both of those films are far superior to Stargate, but that's not to say that I don't love Stargate for what it is. A damn good time. No self-respecting critic can possible call Stargate a "good" movie, but it's a hell of a lot of fun. If the audio is anything like the previous Special Edition, you have to hear the bass to believe it. I swear to god I thought the walls of my house were going to break down from the incredible sound on that disc. I rented that one, and I'd been planning to buy it forever, but then this came around.

Here's a few reviews from some people that GET Stargate:

I didn't see this movie at the theatres but it came with my DVD player several years ago. Before I watched it, I asked my cousin what he thought of it (he is an actor and usually gives a good analysis). His words were it was like a cross between Star Wars and Raiders of The Lost Ark. After I saw it, I understood why. This movie was simply awesome. I have watched it 3 times and will see it again I am sure many times.

Indeed, the movie is average (in my opinion), but the SG-1 series is incredible. Definately the best Sci-Fi on TV right now (although I'm sure many will say Farscape is better...but I just can't get into that show).

Boy, talk about milking a title to death. This is the THIRD release of this title. The first was just the standard version of the movie. The second, the extended version that was shown once on Showtime right before Stargate SG-1 started. Now this, also with an extended version.

One of the reviews states that yet another version of Terminator 2 is in the works as well...

The ONLY reason I am going to buy this additional copy is that it IS anamorphic, unlike the others, and I understand that the video quality is awesome.

Plus, it does not hurt that you get $5 back if you have a previous version, making your final cost $6.43.

The Ultimate Edition has an anamorphic transfer and DD5.1/DTS.

It's worth it for just $11.43. Stargate is a 😎 movie.

If for no other reason, buy this movie for the soundtrack!

This is one of David Arnold's first major soundtracks, and it's a great one. He now does the soundtracks for all the James Bond movies.

Thanks for the links to the cheap ones!

Didn't the sci fi channel kill sg1 too? And for the record, Farscape is better!😉

I couldnt agree more! I have the first two seasons of SG1 on DVD and I hear the 3rd season is supposedly coming out around June this year! I will most likely pick it up the day its out!!!

Thanks for this thread. I would have completely disregarded this new DVD but... After seeing its low price and reading about how awesome the audio and video are, I am super pumped up about it. I hope it ships soon.

I haven't ever seen Farscape, but I can vouch for SG-1 being a great show. I could be wrong but I believe that Farscape is a SciFi original series. Stargate SG-1 is a Showtime original series that is syndicated through Sci-Fi, so no, SciFi wouldn't have axed SG-1.

Actually Sci-Fi bought SG-1 from Showtime. They picked it up Mid-Season and plan on having one more season. Sci-Fi has been airing it from the beginning on Monday's, and broadcast channels have the rights to air the last season from Showtime. Interestingly enough, *both* Fox 11 and UPN 13 air the same episode on the weekend. And there's a third channel here in Los Angeles (Channel 52 I believe) that also airs it on the weekend. I have never seen the same show air on three different independent stations in the same city! 🙂

I have the second release of the Stargate DVD....so if I buy this new one, I can get a discount? Is that a rebate?

Was one of my favorites when it came out, but that was nine years ago, and I haven't really seen it since, so I probably won't like it as well as I did then. But definately worth $12 🙂.

I could never get into SG-1 myself, maybe I liked Kurt Russel better then McGuyver, or maybe I just didn't give it a chance.

I was similar to you for a while. I actually made fun of SG-1 when I first heard about it and McGuyver being in it. I saw it a couple times and didn't care for it much. Then I heard more and more good things about it and when I got my ReplayTV I started recording a few episodes and watching them when I was bored. I started to like it a little but I got sick of not understanding things because I hadn't seen each episode in sequence. So I borrowed the SG-1 Season 1 DVD set from a friend and started watching them in sequence starting with the pilot episode. Now I' halfway through Season 2 and I love the show. I think watching it in sequence makes a HUGE difference because it makes the plot come together a lot more and you focus on the whole story of the show rather than the sub-story within each episode. The sub stories of each episode often times aren't very good.

But now that I love the show, I realize that I like McGuyver way better than Kurt Russel. McGuyver's character is just a more likable personality compared to Russel's. Also, the other characters make a big difference as well. The guy who plays the science nerd in the show is WAY WAY WAY better than James Spader.

Hmmm. I didn't think I could become more of a nerd but apparently I am worse than I thought.

That's probably it, because I always just caught an odd episode here and there, and after the first season it was just hopeless to follow 🙂.
Maybe I'll pick up season one sometime and watch it in order.

Richard Dean Anderson is definately better than Kurt Russel. As for Daniel Jackson's character, I would also have to go with Michael Shanks over James Spader. Although if they kept Spader for the TV series, I think he would have done ok. The best way to watch the series is to watch the dvd sets as they come out. I have only seen 2 shows from this season and I got pretty confused as to what I was going on and what I missed! So, If you want to watch the shows, watch the movie first(to get the plot) and then start fresh with Series 1 dvd set! I will be getting the Ultimate Edition tomorrow!
